Baylor still No. 1 in AP women's basketball poll (AP)

Baylor remains the unanimous No. 1 choice in The Associated Press women's college basketball poll.

The Lady Bears received all the first-place votes Monday for the ninth straight week after routing Oklahoma and Kansas. Baylor visits Missouri and Kansas State this week.

Notre Dame, Connecticut, Stanford and Duke followed the Lady Bears. Connecticut and Duke play each other on Monday night. Kentucky was sixth. Miami, Tennessee, Maryland and Green Bay round out the first 10. It is the highest ranking ever for the Phoenix, who along with Baylor are the only unbeaten teams left in Division I.

Georgia Tech entered the poll for the first time this season at No. 24. The Yellow Jackets host N.C. State on Thursday.

DePaul dropped out of the Top 25.

NATO: Final shift to Afghan force to start in 2013 (AP)

BRUSSELS ? NATO's top official says the alliance will adhere to its plans to hand over security to Afghan forces by the end of 2014.

But in an apparent response to France's call for a speedier NATO exit from Afghanistan, NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said on Monday this meant that "from mid-2013 we will start the final transition of provinces and districts to lead Afghan responsibility."

Last week, French President Nicolas Sarkozy jolted NATO by announcing France would speed up its exit and ask NATO to end its combat mission in 2013.

The move was seen as the latest crack in a coalition already strained by economic troubles in Europe and the United States, the Afghan government's sluggish battle against corruption, and a dogged Taliban that remains unbeaten after a decade of war.

Govt failed to keep records of key nuke meetings (AP)

TOKYO ? Japan's deputy prime minister says the government failed to take minutes of 10 meetings held to formulate its response to the country's nuclear crisis last year and called for officials to compile reports on the meetings retroactively.

The missing minutes have become a hot political debate, with opposition lawmakers saying they are necessary to provide a transparent record of the government's decisions after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami touched off the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl in 1986.

Deputy Prime Minister Katsuya Okada confirmed Friday at a news conference that the minutes were not recorded at the time and called for them to be written up, retroactively, by the end of next month.

Survey suggests family history of psychiatric disorders shapes intellectual interests

Survey suggests family history of psychiatric disorders shapes intellectual interests

Friday, January 27, 2012

A hallmark of the individual is the cultivation of personal interests, but for some people, their intellectual pursuits might actually be genetically predetermined. Survey results published by Princeton University researchers in the journal PLoS ONE suggest that a family history of psychiatric conditions such as autism and depression could influence the subjects a person finds engaging.

Although preliminary, the findings provide a new look at the oft-studied link between psychiatric conditions and aptitude in the arts or sciences. While previous studies have explored this link by focusing on highly creative individuals or a person's occupation, the Princeton research indicates that the influence of familial neuropsychiatric traits on personal interests is apparently independent of a person's talent or career path, and could help form a person's basic preferences and personality.

Princeton researchers surveyed nearly 1,100 students from the University's Class of 2014 early in their freshman year to learn which major they would choose based on their intellectual interests. The students were then asked to indicate the incidence of mood disorders, substance abuse or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in their family, including parents, siblings and grandparents.

Students interested in pursuing a major in the humanities or social sciences were twice as likely to report that a family member had a mood disorder or a problem with substance abuse. Students with an interest in science and technical majors, on the other hand, were three times more likely to report a sibling with an ASD, a range of developmental disorders that includes autism and Asperger syndrome.

Senior researcher Sam Wang, an associate professor in Princeton's Department of Molecular Biology and the Princeton Neuroscience Institute, said that the survey ? though not exhaustive nor based on direct clinical diagnoses ? presents the idea that certain heritable psychiatric conditions are more closely linked to a person's intellectual interests than is currently supposed.

During the past several decades, Wang said, various researchers have found that, in certain people and their relatives, mood or behavior disorders are associated with a higher-than-average representation in careers related to writing and the humanities, while conditions related to autism exhibit a similar correlation with scientific and technical careers.

By focusing on poets, writers and scientists, however, those studies only include people who have advanced far in "artistic" or "scientific" pursuits and professions, potentially excluding a large group of people who have those interests but no particular aptitude or related career, Wang said. He and lead author Benjamin Campbell, a graduate student at Rockefeller University, selected incoming freshmen because the students are old enough to have defined interests, but are not yet on a set career path. (Princeton students do not declare a major until the end of sophomore year.)

"Until our work, evidence of a connection between neuropsychiatric disorders and artistic aptitude, for example, was based on surveying creative people, where creativity is usually defined in terms of occupation or proficiency in an artistic field," Wang said. "But what if there is a broader category of people associated with bipolar or depression, namely people who think that the arts are interesting? The students we surveyed are not all F. Scott Fitzgerald, but many more of them might like to read F. Scott Fitzgerald."

The Princeton research provides a new and "provocative" consideration that other scientists in this area can build upon, said Kay Redfield Jamison, a psychiatry and behavioral science professor at Johns Hopkins University and co-director of the university's Mood Disorders Center.

Jamison, who is well known for her research on bipolar disorder and her work on the artistic/mood disorder connection, said that while interests and choice of career are presumably related, Wang and Campbell present data suggesting that intellectual interests might also be independently shaped by psychiatric conditions, which provides the issue larger context.

In addition, the researchers focused on an age group that is not typically looked at specifically, but that is usually included in analyses that span various ages. Such a targeted approach lends the results a unique perspective, she said. Though the incidence of psychiatric conditions in the Princeton study was based on the students' own reporting and not definitive diagnoses, the rates Wang and Campbell found are not different from other populations, she noted.

"This is an additional way of looking at a complex problem that is very interesting," said Jamison, who played no role in the research project. "This work provides a piece of the puzzle in understanding why people go into particular occupations. In this field, it's important to do as many different kinds of studies as possible, and this is an interesting initial study with very interesting findings. It will provoke people to think about this question and it will provoke people to design other kinds of studies."

An implied connection between psychiatric conditions and a flair for art or science dates to at least Aristotle, who famously noted that those "eminent in philosophy, politics, poetry and the arts have all had tendencies toward melancholia."

Modern explorations of that relationship have examined the actual prevalence of people with neuropsychiatric disorders and their relatives in particular fields.

Among the most recent work, researchers at Sweden's Karolinska Institute reported in the British Journal of Psychiatry in November that of the 300,000 people studied, people with bipolar disorder, as well as their healthy parents and siblings, were more likely to have a "creative" job ? including a field in the arts or sciences ? than people with no familial history of the condition. Parents and siblings of people with schizophrenia also exhibited a greater tendency to have a creative job, though people with schizophrenia did not.

Various other studies in the past few decades have found a similar correlation between psychiatric disorders and "creativity," which is typically defined by a person's career or eminence in an artistic field such as writing or music. In their work, however, Wang and Campbell present those criteria as too narrow. They instead suggest that psychiatric disorders can predispose a person to a predilection for the subject matter independent of any concrete measure of creativity.

Jamison, in an editorial regarding the Karolinska study and published in the same journal issue, wrote that "having a creative occupation is not the same thing as being creative." Wang and Campbell approached their project from the inverse of that statement: Being creative does not necessarily mean a person has a creative occupation.

"A person is not just what they do for a living," Wang said. "I am a scientist, but not just a scientist. I'm also a guy who reads blogs, listens to jazz and likes to cook. In that same respect, I believe we have potentially broadened the original assertion of Aristotle by including not just the artistically creative, but a larger category ? all people whose thought processes gravitate to the humanistic and artistic."

As past studies have, Wang and Campbell suggest a genetic basis for their results. The correlation with interests and psychiatric conditions they observed implies that a common genetic path could lead relatives in similar directions, but with some people developing psychiatric disorders while their kin only possess certain traits of those conditions. Those traits can manifest as preferences for and talents in certain areas, Wang said.

"Altogether, results of our study and those like it suggest that scientists should start thinking about the genetic roots of normal function as much as we discuss the genetic causes of abnormal function. This survey helps show that there might be common cause between the two," Wang said.

"Everyone has specific individual interests that result from experiences in life, but these interests arise from a genetic starting point," Wang said. "This doesn't mean that our genes determine our fate. It just means that our genes launch us down a path in life, leading most people to pursue specific interests and, in extreme cases, leading others toward psychiatric disorders."

Rubio: Immigration not only issue for Hispanics (AP)

WASHINGTON ? A Hispanic-American U.S. senator from Florida who's considered a rising star in the Republican Party says too much is being made of the significance of immigration to his community.

Sen. Marco Rubio says that while immigration is of critical importance, economic security weighs more heavily on Hispanics' minds "on the vast majority of the days of the year."

Rubio appeared on "CBS This Morning" Thursday after harshly criticizing Newt Gingrich's campaign ad labeling Mitt Romney the most anti-immigration candidate. Rubio said "I wouldn't characterize it as a scolding," and said he was a Gingrich "admirer." The ad has been pulled off the air.

Rubio declined speculation about the GOP's vice presidential nomination, saying he didn't think it would be him. He's remained neutral in the closely fought Florida Republican primary.

La Scala projects tough finances in 2012 (AP)

MILAN ? La Scala's general manager said Tuesday that he hopes Premier Mario Monti's government will avoid cutting spending for culture, noting that music and theater can help unite people.

Stephane Lissner told foreign reporters that La Scala will have a difficult time balancing the famed opera house's budget in 2012 due to expected drops in public and private contributions, even as the Milan opera house increases attendance and the number of performances.

"We are facing a very difficult movement," said Lissner, who has balanced La Scala's budget each of the seven years he has been at the opera house. The Frenchman, who was named general manager in May 2005, said the theater had an (EURO)8 million ($10.4 million) shortfall in 2004. Lissner's mandate expires in 2015.

Monti, Italy's new prime minister, has promised to shake up what he calls an over-regulated, underperforming economy, accelerate economic growth and reduce the country's debt burden, which is also 120 percent of its annual economic output. But he faces tough political opposition.

La Scala's budget for 2012 is (EURO)110 million ($150.8 million), down slightly from 2011. Of that, 40 percent comes from the state and 60 percent from private donors, ticket sales and sponsorships.

Lissner bemoaned the fact that La Scala's level of state support ? from the national, regional, provincial and city administrations combined ? is among the lowest in Europe for a public theater.

He compared it with the Paris Opera House, which he said received more than 60 percent state support, and Vienna Opera House, which is around 55 percent state funded.

"It is difficult, but it would be wrong to sacrifice culture," Lissner said, then adding: "There is not much more to sacrifice."

Lissner took it as "a strong signal of support" the fact that both the head of state, President Giorgio Napolitano, and the head of government, Premier Mario Monti, attended the gala premiere of La Scala on Dec. 7, the first time both of the nation's top officials attended La Scala's opening night in 15 years.

But he said he hoped that the government would also see that culture is as necessary "as health or research," and also something that can help people facing economic difficulties.

"The more things are difficult, and the more they go badly, the more the public wants to go to the cinema and to the theater," Lissner said. "They don't only need a distraction. They need above all to be together, under the same roof, in the same theater, to share something together."

Lissner said that despite Italy's financial crisis, the number of subscriptions to La Scala has risen by 7 percent, to some 17,400, which he saw as an encouraging sign. La Scala will stage 253 performances this year, including 21 on other stages, up from around 180 in 2004.

Poorest smokers face toughest odds for kicking the habit

Saturday, January 21, 2012

Quitting smoking is never easy. However, when you're poor and uneducated, kicking the habit for good is doubly hard, according to a new study by a tobacco dependence researcher at The City College of New York (CCNY).

Christine Sheffer, associate medical professor at CCNY's Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education, tracked smokers from different socioeconomic backgrounds after they had completed a statewide smoking cessation program in Arkansas.

Whether rich or poor, participants managed to quit at about the same rate upon completing a program of cognitive behavioral therapy, either with or without nicotine patches. But as time went on, a disparity between the groups appeared and widened.

Those with the fewest social and financial resources had the hardest time staving off cravings over the long run. "The poorer they are, the worse it gets," said Professor Sheffer, who directed the program and was an assistant professor with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences at the time.

She found that smokers on the lowest rungs of the socioeconomic ladder were 55 percent more likely than those at the upper end to start smoking again three months after treatment. By six months post-quitting, the probability of their going back to cigarettes jumped to two-and-a-half times that of the more affluent smokers. The research will be published in the March 2012 issue of the American Journal of Public Health and will appear ahead-of-print online under the journal's "First Look" section.

In their study, Professor Sheffer and her colleagues noted that overall, Americans with household incomes of $15,000 or less smoke at nearly three times the rate of those with incomes of $50,000 or greater. The consequences are bleak. "Smoking is still the greatest cause of preventable death and disease in the United States today," noted Professor Sheffer. "And it's a growing problem in developing countries."

Harder to Stay Away

Professor Sheffer suggested reasons it may be harder for some to give up tobacco forever.

Smoking relieves stress for those fighting nicotine addiction, so it is life's difficulties that often make them reach for the cigarette pack again. Unfortunately, those on the lower end of the socioeconomic scale suffer more hardships than those at the top ? in the form of financial difficulties, discrimination, and job insecurity, to name a few. And for those smokers who started as teenagers, they may have never learned other ways to manage stress, said Professor Sheffer.

For people with lower socioeconomic status (SES), it can be tougher to avoid temptation as well. "Lower SES groups, with lower paying jobs, aren't as protected by smoke-free laws," said Sheffer, so individuals who have quit can find themselves back at work and surrounded by smokers. Also fewer of them have no-smoking policies in their homes.

These factors are rarely addressed in standard treatment programs. "The evidence-based treatments that are around have been developed for middle-class patients," Professor Sheffer pointed out. "So (in therapy) we talk about middle-class problems."

Further research would help determine how the standard six sessions of therapy might be altered or augmented to help. "Our next plan is to take the results of this and other studies and apply what we learned to revise the approach, in order to better meet the needs of poor folks," she said. "Maybe there is a better arrangement, like giving 'booster sessions'. Not everybody can predict in six weeks all the stresses they will have later on down the road."

"Some people say [quitting] is the most difficult thing in their life to do," said Sheffer. "If we better prepare people with more limited resources to manage the types of stress they have in their lives, we'd get better results. "

Republican hopefuls take fight to Florida (Reuters)

COLUMBIA, South Carolina (Reuters) ? After a bruising clash in South Carolina, Republican presidential frontrunners Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich will take their battle to a bigger stage when the campaign moves to Florida on Sunday.

Gingrich, a former U.S. House of Representatives speaker, thrashed Romney in the South Carolina primary on Saturday, suggesting the race for their party's nomination and the right to face President Barack Obama in November may last months more.

The largest of the early voting states by far, Florida presents logistical and financial challenges that appear to give an advantage to Romney's well funded campaign machine.

But Gingrich has momentum after coming from behind in South Carolina to win around 40 percent of the vote, followed by Romney with 28 percent. Rick Santorum, a former U.S. senator, was in third with 17 percent and U.S. congressman Ron Paul in fourth with 13 percent.

"We proved here in South Carolina that people ... with the right ideas beats big money," Gingrich told supporters after his victory in the conservative state.

After strong performances in a series of debates, Gingrich was seen by South Carolina voters as the most likely Republican to beat Obama, a Democrat, in the November 6 election.

They also rejected millionaire former businessman Romney's pitch that he is the best bet to fix a broken U.S. economy and win the White House.

Romney and Gingrich, who have attacked each other mercilessly in a series of negative television ads since December, face off in a debate in Tampa, Florida, on Monday night.

ROMNEY TAX SOLUTION?

Romney has stumbled over questions about his personal finances in recent debates and acknowledged last week that he only pays a 15 percent tax rate, much lower than that of most working Americans.

The former Massachusetts governor has so far resisted calls from rivals, and even ally New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, to release his tax returns.

To try to put the tax return controversy behind him, the Romney campaign has a plan to settle the issue next week, a Republican official said.

That is part of a strategy to be more aggressive against Gingrich, a formidable debater who nevertheless has personal and professional baggage that the Romney team could exploit. Romney accuses Gingrich of being a Washington insider.

"The choice within our party has also come into stark focus. President Obama has no experience running a business and no experience running a state. Our party can't be lead to victory by someone who also has never run a business and never run a state," Romney said on Saturday.

Romney saw his aura of inevitability erode in South Carolina after leading opinion polls by 10 percentage points a week ago.

In Florida, he leads Gingrich by 40.5 percent to 22 percent, according to a poll of polls by RealClearPolitics.com. Santorum, a social conservative who is from Pennsylvania, is third with 15 percent.

Campaigns must spend at least $1 million each week to reach voters in the sprawling southern state, according to local political officials. Romney's allies have already spent $5 million, mostly on ads attacking Gingrich. No other candidate has a significant presence in the state.

Sarkozy urges much tougher sanctions on Iran (AP)

PARIS ? French President Nicolas Sarkozy is urging stronger, more decisive sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program.

France wants the entire European Union to impose an embargo on Iranian oil and freeze the international assets of Iran's central bank to force it to halt the suspected development of nuclear arms.

Iran insists its nuclear activities are aimed at producing energy, not arms. An EU decision may be reached at a meeting in Brussels next week.

In an annual speech on French diplomacy Friday, Sarkozy accused Iran of lying and denounced what he called its "senseless race for a nuclear bomb."

He called for "much stronger, much more decisive" sanctions ? "time is running out" and "everything must be done to avoid" international military intervention, he added.

Multiple attacks in Nigeria kill at least 143

The series of coordinated attacks were attributed to a radical Islamic group.

A coordinated attack by a radical Islamist sect in north Nigeria's largest city killed at least 143 people, a hospital official said Saturday, representing the extremist group's deadliest assault since beginning its campaign of terror in Africa's most populous nation.

Soldiers and police officers swarmed Kano's streets as Nigeria's president again promised the sect known as Boko Haram would "face the full wrath of the law." But the uniformed bodies of security agents that filled a Kano hospital mortuary again showed the sect can strike at will against the country's weak central government.

Friday's attacks hit police stations, immigration offices and the local headquarters of Nigeria's secret police in Kano, a city of more than 9 million people that remains an important political and religious center in the country's Muslim north. A suicide bomber detonated a car loaded with powerful explosives outside a regional police headquarters, tearing its roof away and blowing out windows in a blast felt miles away as its members escaped jail cells there.

Authorities largely refused to offer casualty statistics as mourners began claiming the bodies of their loved ones to bury before sundown, following Islamic tradition. However, a hospital official told The Associated Press at least 143 people were killed in the attack.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to release the death toll to journalists. The toll could still rise, since other bodies could be held at other clinics and hospitals in the sprawling city.

State authorities enforced a 24-hour curfew in the city, with many remaining home as soldiers and police patrolled the streets and setup roadblocks. Gunshots echoed through some areas of the city into Saturday morning.

Nwakpa O. Nwakpa, a spokesman for the Nigerian Red Cross, said volunteers offered first aid to the wounded, and evacuated those seriously injured to local hospitals. A survey of two hospitals by the Red Cross showed at least 50 people were injured in Friday's attack, he said.

A Boko Haram spokesman using the nom de guerre Abul-Qaqa claimed responsibility for the attacks in a message to journalists Friday. He said the attack came because the state government refused to release Boko Haram members held by the police.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Saturday that he was "shocked and appalled" by the attacks in the former colony.

"The full horror of last night's events is still unfolding, but we know that a great many people have died and many more have been injured," Hague said in a statement. "The nature of these attacks has sickened people around the world and I send my deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of those killed and to those injured."

Hands, feet found near severed head discovery site in LA

Investigators found two human hands and two feet Wednesday when they returned with search dogs to a popular hiking trail a day after two dogwalkers discovered a severed head in a bag at the location below the Hollywood sign.

About 12 detectives conducted a grid search of the area early Wednesday, NBC Los Angeles reported. They were looking in an area about 1/4-mile from the Bronson Canyon Park gates near the 3200 block of Canyon Drive.

See complete coverage by NBC Los Angeles.

Authorities discovered one hand Wednesday morning about 50 yards from the location of the head, which was found at about 3 p.m. Tuesday when dogs being walked by two women began playing with a bag not far off the trail.

The second hand and the feet were found in the afternoon.

Both hands and feet were found within a 50-yard radius of the head, NBC Los Angeles reported.

Police on Wednesday also described the original grisly discovery.

"At one point, one of the dogs ran into the brush and came out carrying a plastic grocery bag," said LAPD Commander Andrew Smith. "As the dog shook the plastic grocery bag, the severed human head fell out of the bag onto the ground."

TMZ reported that one of the dog walkers who found the head asked a passer-by if she could use his phone to call the police. After he obliged, the man took a photo of the head. The picture is now up for sale. According to TMZ, it depicts a male's bloody head, with very red and slightly decomposed skin.

The head, which appears to have been severed just below the chin, probably was placed near the trail just a few days ago after the individual was slain at a different location, according to investigators, NBC Los Angeles reported. It did not show signs of significant decomposition.

The victim is likely between 40 and 60 years old, but the coroner will need to conduct an investigation before more information about the individual can be provided.

The head was believed to be a man, possibly of Armenian descent, in his 40s with salt-and-pepper hair, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Investigators hope to come up with a sketch of the victim in order to identify who he is, officials said. Coroner's investigators also will attempt to identify the victim through dental records.

The grim discovery put many residents in the area on edge.

"I walked around the house locking all the doors," Susan Moss, a Canyon Drive Resident, told NBC Los Angeles. "I hope it's not something that actually occurred in our neighborhood where, as horrible as it sounds, it is a human, but I'm hoping it wasn't a murder that happened in our general vicinity. I'm hoping it's just someone trying to get rid of it."

The women who discovered the bag work as dog walkers and had about nine dogs with them at the time, Officer Karen Rayner said.

The investigation is being handled by LAPD?s Robbery-Homicide Division.

The stretch of road where the head was found is a hiking trail popular with local residents, especially dog walkers.

The trail also passes by the "Batcave," which was used in the original Batman and Robin series.

(AP) ? NBC comedy "30 Rock" often finds laughs in real-life events in the show business world it inhabits.

But Thursday's edition targeted one of its own cast members, Tracy Morgan, who found himself in real-life hot water last June after making anti-gay remarks during a stand-up appearance in Nashville, Tenn.

On the "30 Rock" episode, Tracy Jordan, the character Morgan plays, sparked a protest after making a couple of ridiculous gay-oriented jokes at a club date.

A contrite Jordan mistakenly apologizes to the makers of Glad bags, rather than to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, known as GLAAD.

Jordan's boss, played by series star Tina Fey, is forced to apologize for him.

"He's not capable of hate," she assures the media. "He's just an idiot who doesn't know what he's saying."

In real life, Tracy Morgan publicly apologized to his fans and the gay and lesbian community for what he called "my choice of words." He denied being a hateful person and acknowledged that "even in a comedy club" what he said went too far "and was not funny in any context." During his rant, Morgan had said in part that if his son were gay, he would "pull out a knife and stab" him.

Fey, who is also the creator and an executive producer of "30 Rock," issued a statement at the time declaring "I hope for his sake that Tracy's apology will be accepted as sincere by his gay and lesbian co-workers at '30 Rock.'"

Mirroring that real-life statement on Thursday's episode, Fey's character, Liz Lemon, chides Jordan by saying, "Do you know how many of your hardworking and dedicated co-workers are gay?"

Tender Young Brains

In a positive stress response, the stress hormones (like cortisol, adrenaline, and epinephrine) are revved up briefly?curdling stomachs, dampening palms, speeding up heartbeats, quickening breaths, setting the brain to high alert?and then return to their normal state. Picture a little kid freaking out when a nurse approaches with a needle or hiding under a table on the first day of nursery school. It may break your heart as a parent to witness your child?s tears, but it isn?t going to create long-lasting damage. A positive stress response is mild to moderate and?importantly?includes the presence of a supportive adult who can help the child manage the stress.

The nations weather (AP)

Weather Underground Forecast for Monday, January 16, 2012.

The cold and unstable airmass of the Northwest will spread into the Central Great Basin and the Central Rockies by early Monday morning as a strong cold front moves through the area. Below average temperatures in these regions will allow widely scattered light snow showers to develop through the morning hours. Snow in the Central Rockies will be enhanced by a system and moisture pushing out of the desert Southwest. Total snow accumulations in the mountains are expected to range from 5 to 10 inches with locally higher amounts. Gusty southwest winds may create periods of drifting snow through the day. A Winter Weather Advisory will remain in effect for the Central Rockies through Monday evening. Behind this system, chilly, below normal temperatures will persist in much of the West. Another disturbance will move across Washington in the afternoon, allowing for more rain and mountain snow showers.

Meanwhile, the trough of low pressure in the Northwest will slide out of the Northern Rockies and a cold front will extend from the Upper Great Lakes through the Central and Southern Plains. Southerly flow ahead of this front and it 1/4's associated low pressure system in the Central Plains will usher moisture from the Gulf of Mexico northward. This will lead to generally light rain showers in the Lower Mississippi Valley and eastern Texas through the afternoon. Showers will increase and spread into the Tennessee and Ohio Valley during the evening/Monday night with possible thunderstorm activity as the cold front pushes eastward. Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday have ranged from a morning low of -23 degrees at Watertown, N.Y. to a high of 82 degrees at Alexandria Esle, La.

nyan~

Hello ^^ I'm Princess Rose. I've been on here for a while now. I have quite a few ideas for different types of roleplays. I'm not going to write the storylines here though. You can pick a rp then pm me and I'll tell you the storylines. :]

What you can expect from me:
~semi-lit, I usually do 3+ lines but it depends on how much you give me to work with. I can write around two paragraphs if it's a good day and you give me enough to work with.
~Good spelling and grammer.
~I'm 14 so I like to keep the rp PG-13. If the characters want to "you know" then we can do a time skip.
~I'm homeschooled so I'm able to be online a lot.
~my timezone is GMT (Greenwhich Mean Time)
~I can roleplay both genders.
~I prefer 1x1's in pms. Rping in pms is easier for me because that way I'm notified instantly.

What I want from you:
~At least 3 lines or more.
~You need to be active.
~Good spelling and grammer.
~If possible you should be in a similar time zone but it doesn't really matter.
~Be able to rp both genders.
~You need to be ok with time skips when it comes to certain things.
~You need to be ok with pms.
~Don't ditch me for no reason, if you want to quit the rp you should tell me.

What I'll do:

Original
~VampirexHuman
~Vampire HunterxVampire
~AssassinxTarget (I like being the target)
~WerewolfxHuman
~ShapeshifterxHuman
~Boys love
~Girls love
~BullyxVictim (I like being the victim)
~GangsterxNormal girl (I like being the girl)
~DemonxHuman

Fanfic
~The Vampire Diaries KlausxAmber (Amber is me)
~The Vampire Diaries DamonxKrystal (Krystal is me)
~The Vampire Diaries DamonxElena
~The Vampire Diaries KlausxElena

Researchers use sugar to halt esophageal cancer in its tracks

ScienceDaily (Jan. 15, 2012) ? Scientists working at the Medical Research Council have identified changes in the patterns of sugar molecules that line pre-cancerous cells in the esophagus, a condition called Barrett's dysplasia, making it much easier to detect and remove these cells before they develop into esophageal cancer. These findings, reported in the journal Nature Medicine, have important implications for patients and may help to monitor their condition and prevent the development of cancer.

Esophageal cancer is the fifth biggest cause of cancer death in the United Kingdom and the eighth leading cause of cancer deaths for men in the United States. Moreover, the number of people diagnosed with this disease is increasing rapidly. Individuals with a pre-cancerous condition known as Barrett's esophagus are at an increased risk of developing esophageal cancer, and need to be closely monitored to make sure that the disease is not progressing.

Dysplasia offers a stage at which cancer can be prevented by removing these cells. However correctly identifying these areas has proved to be problematic, as they can easily be missed during endoscopy and biopsy, which only take samples from a small part of the esophagus. This can result in false reassurance for patients in whom their dysplasia has been missed, and conversely those without dysplasia having to undergo further unnecessary treatments.

The team, based at the MRC Cancer Cell Unit in Cambridge, was led by Dr. Rebecca Fitzgerald and included New York University's Lara Mahal, an associate professor of chemistry, and William Eng, a laboratory technician.

The researchers discovered a new mechanism for identifying Barrett's dysplasia cells by spraying on a fluorescent probe that sticks to sugars and lights up any abnormal areas during endoscopy. By analyzing the sugars present in human tissue samples taken from different stages on the pathway to cancer -- using microarray technology developed by NYU's Mahal -- they found that there were different sugar molecules present on the surface of the pre-cancerous cells. This technology uses sugar binding proteins, known as lectins, to identify changes in sugars and pinpointed carbohydrate binding wheat germ proteins as a potential diagnostic. When the wheat germ proteins, attached to a fluorescent tag that glows under a specific type of light, were sprayed onto tissue samples, it showed decreased binding in areas of dysplasia, and these cells were clearly marked compared with the glowing green background.

"The rise in cases of esophageal cancer both in the UK and throughout the Western world means that it is increasingly important to find ways of detecting it as early as possible," Fitzgerald said. "Our work has many potential benefits for those with Barrett's esophagus who have an increased risk of developing esophageal cancer."

"We have demonstrated that binding of a wheat germ protein, which is cheap and non-toxic, can identify differences in surface sugars on pre-cancerous cells," she added. "And when coupled with fluorescence imaging using an endoscopic camera, this technique offers a promising new way of finding and then treating patients with the highest risk of developing esophageal cancer, at the earliest stage."

Editor: Hacking might have occurred at 2nd tabloid (AP)

LONDON ? The editor of Britain's Daily Mirror tabloid says it's possible illegal phone hacking took place at the newspaper.

Richard Wallace told the country's media ethics inquiry on Monday that hacking "might well" have been going on at the Mirror in the early 2000s.

But he said he had no knowledge of it and insisted "ethical issues are embedded" within the culture of the newsroom.

Wallace's predecessor, CNN celebrity interviewer Piers Morgan, has told the inquiry that he didn't believe he ever listened to hacked voicemail messages while he was editor between 1995 and 2004.

The judge-led inquiry into press standards and ethics was set up in the wake of revelations about illegal eavesdropping at Rupert Murdoch's now-shuttered News of the World.

Mississippi AG seeks to void governor's pardons (Reuters)

JACKSON, Mississippi (Reuters) ? Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood said on Friday he would ask a court to overturn the majority of former Governor Haley Barbour's 222 pardons of convicts because they failed to meet constitutional requirements.

Barbour, a prominent Republican, sparked controversy by pardoning 222 convicts -- including murderers and rapists -- during his final days in office this month, generating debate about how much power a governor should have to pardon criminals convicted of serious crimes.

"We will introduce our evidence in Hinds County Circuit Court on January 23 and ask the court to hold these purported pardons null and void," Hood said in a statement.

Of the 181 pardons reviewed so far, at least 167 did not meet the constitutional requirement of having published notice of their request for clemency in local newspapers where the crimes were committed, Hood said.

A preliminary review found 203 of the 222 pardons were full pardons, Hood said.

He described it as an "arduous task" to contact all the local newspapers to determine how many of the pardons had met the public notification requirement.

Barbour, in remarks broadcast on CBS Evening News on Friday, said he was "fully confident the pardons and other clemency that I have given are all valid."

"I believe in second chances, and I try hard to be forgiving," Barbour said. "None of these people are considered dangerous or threats to society. Some of them are in wheelchairs or are amputees."

A Mississippi judge on Wednesday barred the state from releasing 21 inmates still serving time when their pardons were announced and ordered five others who had already been freed to appear for a hearing on January 23.

Hood's office was able to contact four of the five men who had already been released to inform them of the court date, but appealed for the public to help in finding the remaining individual.

Barbour, a former Republican National Committee chairman who considered running for president this year, pardoned more people on his last day of office than his four most recent predecessors combined, according to state government statistics.

Barbour's office has said a minority of those convicts who received clemency remained behind bars and that 90 percent of them were no longer in prison when the pardons were granted.

Barbour had said that the pardons were intended to allow the inmates "to find gainful employment or acquire professional licenses as well as hunt and vote," and that his decisions were typically based on the recommendation of the Parole Board.

One of those pardoned was the brother of former National Football League quarterback Brett Favre. Earnest Scott Favre was convicted in 1996 of driving while intoxicated after a vehicle he was driving crashed and killed his best friend.

Also included were four men convicted of murder and another convicted of armed robbery, all serving life sentences, who worked at the governor's mansion cleaning vehicles, waiting tables and performing other domestic duties.
