Militia leaders plead guilty to gun charges

The Hutaree militia had earlier been cleared of conspiracy charges stemming from accusation of domestic terrorism.

A Michigan militia leader and his son pleaded guilty Thursday to possessing a machine gun, giving prosecutors their only gain in a domestic terror trial that was upended when the judge dismissed charges of plotting war against the government.

Hutaree leader David Stone rocked in a chair at the defense table after pleading guilty and told reporters he was a "stand-up true American patriot" whose anti-government comments and bravado about wanting to kill police were not a call to attack the United States.

He and six militia members were cleared Tuesday of conspiracy charges, which he called a "victory for everyone" who cherishes the First Amendment.

"It's amazing how someone can take a comment out of context and make it to whatever they want it to be," Stone, 51, said.

What do you know about the Second Amendment? Take our quiz.

Gun charges were all that remained for Stone and Joshua Stone, 23, both from Lenawee County, Mich., after U.S. District Judge Victoria Roberts said prosecutors in six weeks had failed to present evidence of a specific plan to go to war against law enforcement and federal authorities.

Jurors heard hours of secretly recorded conversations between David Stone and an FBI informant and agent. He talked about killing police, building bombs and engaging an international coalition of freedom-hating law enforcers dubbed the "brotherhood."

"The government's case is built largely of circumstantial evidence," the judge said Tuesday. "While this evidence could certainly lead a rational fact-finder to conclude that 'something fishy' was going on, it does not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that defendants reached a concrete agreement to forcibly oppose the United States government."

Defense lawyers said David Stone is a Christian who was preparing to do battle with the armies of the Antichrist, not the U.S. government.

A juror, Rickey Randall, 58, said the judge made the right call.

"I heard talk, talk, talk, but no action," Randall said. "I was shocked by their effort to bring the defendants to trial. ... Do you think a group that small can go up against the mighty U.S. government?"

In her first remarks since the case was gutted, U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade said she wouldn't have handled the case differently and "strongly" disagrees with the judge's interpretation of federal conspiracy law.

"If you have a suggestion, let me know," she told The Associated Press during an interview in her office.

"I take the view that you stop 'em when you can if you've got evidence," McQuade said. "We have an obligation to protect the public. The jury and the judge don't have that obligation. ... There were many plans to oppose by force the authority of the United States."

David Stone was released on bond after two years in custody. He could face another year in prison when he's sentenced for the gun crime on Aug. 8 but hopes the judge will consider the past two years as enough punishment. Joshua Stone, too, has been jailed for two years and could face more time behind bars.

The elder Stone said the trial's outcome likely will stir anxieties about the government among other militias.

"Now they know their paranoia is true," he said, referring to the FBI's tactics.

What do you know about the Second Amendment? Take our quiz.

David Stone's wife, Tina Stone, and another son, David Stone Jr., were among the militia members cleared of all charges this week. The four Stones walked away from the courthouse together Thursday. Tina Stone earlier said her husband's Hutaree days are over, although she said the group never was the violent threat the government had claimed.

"They couldn't overthrow F Troop," she said, referring to a 1960s TV satire about soldiers in the Old West after the Civil War.

Militia members are finding that resuming their lives isn't easy. Despite his acquittal, Michael Meeks of Manchester, Mich., said he can't open a bank account yet because the bank told him he's still on a terror watch list. Told of the troubles, McQuade didn't seem moved.

"It's the consequences of their actions," the prosecutor told the AP.

Peru animal mounds likely oldest ever found

Manmade mounds shaped like orcas, condors and even a duck may be the oldest evidence of animal mounds outside of North America, according to a former University of Missouri anthropologist.

Writing in the magazine Antiquity, Robert Benfer, a professor emeritus, describes a series of mounds, some more than 1,300 feet (400 meters) across, in coastal valleys in Peru. Archaeological evidence at the sites pegs some at more than 4,000 years old.

"It's going to shake everybody's views," Benfer told LiveScience. "The previous oldest animal figures were at Nazca and they're 2,000 years old."

The Nazca Lines are simple stone outlines of animals decorating the Nazca Desert in Peru. Like the newly discovered mounds, they may have had ritual significance. In addition, the shapes likely coincided with the constellations these ancient people saw in the Milky Way.

Strange shapes
Benfer discovered the mounds while looking at satellite photos of a site about which he'd long held suspicions. The feature seemed shaped like a condor, he said, but archaeological wisdom suggested that animal effigy mounds were a North America-only phenomenon, with few exceptions, such as one at a Central America site in Mexico.

    4. How conservatives lost faith in science

The satellite photos revealed furrows that looked like teeth as well as a burned charcoal area perfectly positioned in the spot where the eye of the bird would be. Global positional system (GPS) information and an archaeological investigation of the site convinced Benfer that he was, in fact, looking at a condor-shaped mound, with the eye likely being a site where offerings were burned. The condor is oriented according to astronomical rules: It lines up with the most extreme orientation of the Milky Way as seen from the Chillon Valley where the mound is found. [See Images of the Animal Mounds]

Next to the condor is a second mound, this one oriented toward the spot where the sun rises on the day of the June solstice, the start of summer. This 1,062-foot-long (324 m) mound appears to be a combination puma and alligatorlike cayman, Benfer reported. Stone pillars, plastic structures and ancient ceramics are associated with all of the sites.

Astronomical markers
In another Peruvian coastal area, the Casma Valley, Benfer discovered two additional birdlike figures, both "looking" toward the June solstice sunrise. Most likely, he said, these mounds were built under the direction of astronomer-priests. The ancient civilization that constructed the mounds would have depended on astronomical clues to know when to plant and harvest crops, and fish, Benfer said. This astronomical knowledge would eventually turn up in the Inca civilization in the 1400s and 1500s, which recognized the same constellations.

"This was the beginning of a very long tradition," Benfer said.

The oldest of the sites dates back to 2200 B.C. Benfer plans to return to the mounds to extract organic material for more precise radiocarbon dating, which is based on the time it takes that carbon to decay.

The four large mounds are only the tip of the iceberg, he added ? he has explored only five of the 54 valleys along the Peruvian coast and has found numerous smaller mounds, including ones shaped like orcas and even a duck. Many unexplored valleys likely hold more mounds, Benfer said.

"It's a totally unexpected find," he said. "It's especially unexpected to archaeologists like me who had walked over some of these sites before without realizing what we walked over."

Two-in-one device uses sewage as fuel to make electricity and clean the sewage

ScienceDaily (Mar. 28, 2012) ? Scientists have described a new and more efficient version of an innovative device the size of a home washing machine that uses bacteria growing in municipal sewage to make electricity and clean up the sewage at the same time. Their report at the 243rd National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in San Diego on March 28 suggested that commercial versions of the two-in-one device could be a boon for the developing world and water-short parts of the U.S.

"Our prototype incorporates innovations so that it can process five times more sewage six times more efficiently at half the cost of its predecessors," said Orianna Bretschger, Ph.D., who presented a report on the improved technology at the ACS meeting.

"We've improved its energy recovery capacity from about 2 percent to as much as 13 percent, which is a great step in the right direction. That actually puts us in a realm where we could produce a meaningful amount of electricity if this technology is implemented commercially. Eventually, we could have wastewater treatment for free. That could mean availability for cleaner water in the developing world, or in southern California and other water-short areas of the United States through the use of more wastewater recycling technologies," she said.

Current wastewater treatment technology involves a number of steps designed to separate the solid and liquid components of sewage and clean the wastewater before it is released into a waterway. This often involves settling tanks, macerators that break down larger objects, membranes to filter particles, biological digestion steps and chemicals that kill harmful microbes. One estimate puts their energy use at 2 percent of overall consumption in the U.S.

Bretschger's team at the J. Craig Venter Institute is developing one version of a so-called microbial fuel cell (MFC). Traditional fuel cells, like those used on the Space Shuttles and envisioned for cars in the future "hydrogen economy," convert fuel directly into electricity without igniting the fuel. They react or combine hydrogen and oxygen, for instance, and produce electricity and drinkable water. MFCs are biological fuel cells. They use organic matter, such as the material in sewage, as fuel, and microbes break down the organic matter. In the process of doing so, the bacteria produce electrons, which have a negative charge and are the basic units of electricity. Electricity consists of a flow of electrons or other charges through a circuit.

The new MFC uses ordinary sewage obtained from a conventional sewage treatment plant. Microbes that exist naturally in the sewage produce electrons as they metabolize, or digest, organic material in the sludge. Bretschger found that microbes exist in the MFC community that might even break down potentially harmful pollutants like benzene and toluene that may be in the sludge.

An MFC consists of a sealed chamber in which the microbes grow in a film on an electrode, which receives their electrons. Meanwhile, positively-charged units termed protons pass through a membrane to a second, unsealed container. In that container, microbes growing on another electrode combine oxygen with those protons and the electrons flowing as electricity from the electrode in the sealed chamber, producing water or other products like hydrogen peroxide.

Bretschger said the MFC also is quite effective in treating sewage to remove organic material, and data suggest a decrease in disease-causing microbes.

"We remove about 97 percent of the organic matter," she said. "That sounds clean, but it is not quite clean enough to drink. In order to get to potable, you need 99.99 percent removal and more complete disinfection of the water." Still, she suggested their MFC might one day replace some of the existing steps in municipal wastewater treatment.

The group presented their first MFC last year. Since then, they increased the amount of waste their device could handle each week from 20 gallons to 100 gallons, trucked in from a local treatment plant near San Diego. They also replaced the titanium components with a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) frame and graphite electrodes. Because of that, the new fuel cell costs about $150 per gallon, half as expensive as their previous prototype. The group hopes eventually to bring the cost under $20 per gallon or less to be cost competitive with existing water treatment technologies.

Bretschger reported that the new device is also more than six times as efficient as its predecessor, turning 13 percent of the usable energy in the sludge into electricity. While this only generates a small current, Bretschger explained that a large device running at 20-25 percent efficiency could produce enough power to operate a conventional wastewater treatment plant. A typical sewage treatment plant may consume enough electricity to power 10,000 or more homes, according to some estimates.

The scientists acknowledged funding from the California State PIER EISG program and the San Diego Foundation Blasker Science and Technology award.

Can You Predict What Relationships Will Endure?

?? ~ by OneMoreOption

I?m?the product?of a broken relationship, a child of divorced parents.

The relationship was probably already terminally over when I was conceived.? As I?ve mentioned here before, my Mother told me once that part of the reason she chose to conceive me, one more child, possibly a son, was as an attempt to keep the relationship together.? I think it is fair to imply she would have done almost anything to preserve her marriage ? to give her husband everything he wanted that she could give.

Tonight, I watched the video from Christie Brinkley?s appearance on the Today show this morning.? I have not closely followed her divorce, but I have seen her ex-husband, Peter Cook, and her both describe their points of view in front of TV cameras.? Each think the other is a flawed person at their core.? Each of them throw out clinical descriptive terms for the mental ailments of the other.

My parents were never like that.? Even after they separated, I never heard one of them give a serious or thorough critique of the other?s behaviors and choices.? I think, in their rare case, they may have both understood that at their cores, they were not well matched philosophically and religiously.? Instead of railing against their perceptions of the faults and missteps?of the other, they may have each conceded they were not pleasantly compatible.

In contrast, Brinkley and Cook appear to have made a sport of regularly making efforts to harm and publicly criticize the other.?

I don?t take the time to write unless I believe I have some uncommon insight to share.? However, if you think I?m going to tell you how to avoid getting involved with the wrong kind of person, you have guessed incorrectly.?

I don?t know how to tell you what couples will endure and what couples won?t.? I don?t know how to tell you how to identify what couples will be civil with each other after they have separated and what couples won?t.? I don?t have those predictive nor identifying skills to teach you.

I?ve been in relationships I thought could last forever ? if both people wanted them to endure.? And most of those relationships have failed . . . or at least they have not endured.

Even now, if you asked me:? Of all the women you dated, which woman do you think you would have the most likelihood of being happy with for a long time?? With experience, hindsight and reality, I could answer the question practically.? But if I didn?t have the knowledge of my real history, I don?t know, with all I know about myself, others, and human relations, if I could accurately predict with whom I would have the most likely chance to succeed.

As I said, I don?t waste reader?s times unless I have something worth remembering to share.?

First, it?s important to know that someone like me, who is well-educated in psychology, social sciences, literature, the arts, history, cinema,?and behavioral theories, and who has been successful at maintaining a long term romantic relationship for over 18 years ? I still cannot teach you all you need to know to be able to select an excellent lover and partner ? specifically for you or generally for the ?average person.?? It is important for the ?most educated? and ?successful? of us to concede?we still don?t have the ability to predict or control those processes and make them happen.

Second, implicit in that humble concession is this:? No matter how much you know, no matter how much care you take in selecting a partner, and no matter how hard you work at the relationship and love the other person:? Whether or not you stay together with another specific person?will still ultimately be beyond your ability to control.

Third, no matter how good of a person you think you are, and no matter how good of a person you think the other person has been:? You still cannot control how the other person will behave toward you after the relationship is over.

There should be some solace in conceding the factors that are beyond your control.? Really bad things happen to really good people.? And sometimes two really good people really can?t get along with each other on intimate or interdependent levels.

You can only control how kind and civil you are toward them.? You may not be able to effect how kind or civil they are toward you.

Having watched Ms. Brinkley and Mr. Cook on their public soapboxes, I?m not sympathetic toward either of them.? They both appear to be firmly intent on harming the other ? despite each of their passive aggressive declarations to the contrary.? I can understand how their interactions with each other may have left both of them jaded, causing both of them to lose their faith and belief in love.

To those of you who have loved well and still lost, you have my sincere sympathies and condolences.? I would like to tell you that:? Despite your real and personal experiences, love does exist and can endure.? But until you experience enduring love first hand, I?m just one more preacher, selling a box of emotional goods on a corner.? And like?any preacher, my belief in love could be as easily derailed as yours if people I loved failed my expectations.??

?On and on, the rain will fall
Like tears from a star
Like tears from a star
On and?on, the?rain will say
How fragile we are
How fragile we are??? ~ ?Fragile?? Sting

I wish things were simpler and easier.? But they are not.? And strength and appreciation comes from that knowledge.

I realize that most of the items for sale are simply packages to teach you how to do what they are doing for you (selling you a how-to pack), but I am looking for ways to make real money, rather quickly, using the Internet ? WITHOUT sponsoring, posting Mlm Ads (in ANY form).

Thoughts?
Hmm?Smells like Quixtar.

The only ones making ?REAL? money on the internet?
Google & Yahoo

Everyone wants to sit at home in their P.J.?s and Make Money at the same time they?re updating their MySpace profile? just not going to happen in the real world.

- Good Luck!

Reports of the U.S. mortgage- insurance industry?s demise have been greatly exaggerated. Hong Kong's elite heed Beijing, pick Leung leader

(AP) ? Hong Kong's elite elected a former government Cabinet member as the southern Chinese financial hub's next leader on Sunday, heeding Beijing's wishes and public opinion following a tumultuous, bitter race that highlighted public discontent.

Leung Chun-ying was declared the semiautonomous territory's next chief executive by election officials after securing 689 votes from a 1,200-seat committee of business leaders and other elites.

Leung bowed deeply three times to election committee members and others watching the vote after his victory was declared.

Henry Tang, who was seen early on as Beijing's choice before a string of gaffes and scandals torpedoed his already-low approval rating, received 285 votes. Pro-democracy candidate Albert Ho, who had no chance to win, got 76 votes.

Several hundred pro-democracy protesters gathered outside the polling station, but were prevented from entering by police officers manning barricades.

Many committee members were expected to vote according to the wishes of China's leaders. Leung's victory reflects Beijing's efforts in recent days to quietly signal that it was backing off from initial support of the deeply unpopular Tang.

Hong Kong, a former British colony that was returned to Chinese rule in 1997, is an unrestrained global capital of commerce with Western-style rights and freedoms not seen on the mainland. But it has never had full democracy, and Hong Kong's 7.1 million residents had no say in the election.

The tumultuous race has heightened many Hong Kongers' desire to directly elect their leader, which Beijing has promised could happen as early as 2017, although no road map has been laid out.

Tang, the son of a wealthy businessman and former financial secretary with a reputation as a wine-loving playboy, was never popular with ordinary Hong Kong residents.

His scandals added to wider public discontent, driven by a yawning rich-poor gap and sky-high housing prices that have stirred resentment of the city's billionaires, who control Hong Kong's economy and vast real estate empires, and their perceived close ties with the government.

Should you be a shopping Good Samaritan?

Say you see someone in a store who's about to pay more than they have to for an item. Would you let the person know?

A few days ago, Sarah and I were buying shoes for our daughter. She?s graduating to shoes with laces, as she?s developed the finger strength and dexterity to tie them for herself, plus her feet are just getting too big for her old ones.

Skip to next paragraph Trent Hamm

The Simple Dollar is a blog for those of us who need both cents and sense: people fighting debt and bad spending habits while building a financially secure future and still affording a latte or two. Our busy lives are crazy enough without having to compare five hundred mutual funds ? we just want simple ways to manage our finances and save a little money.

Recent posts

After checking prices in several different stores, we found the perfect pair in an outlet store. The little girl fell in love with the purple design and the sparkles, I respected the sturdy craftsmanship, and the price was pretty solid, too ? around $12.

Content with our purchase, we looked around for other items in the same area. We walked down to another outlet store about a block away and found ourselves browsing a mix of children?s clothing and shoes.

While there, Sarah spied a family of six ? two adults and four small girls ? trying on shoes. One of the pairs that one of the girls was trying on was virtually identical to the pair we had just bought for our daughter (it might have actually been the same model, but I wasn?t quite close enough to tell ? suffice it to say that they were very similar). They then talked about the price of the shoes, and I saw Sarah almost choke when she heard that the family was about to pay $50 for that pair of shoes.

She couldn?t hold it in. She spoke up by tapping the mother on the shoulder and saying that we had found almost the exact same pair of shoes for 80% less at a store down the block. The mother?s eyes lit up, she thanked Sarah several times, and that family practically ran out of that store.

Since then, I?ve been flipping this situation over and over again in my mind.

First of all, is it intrusive to suggest lower prices to other customers? If I know that a person can get a lower price on a particular item elsewhere, do I feel appropriate telling them so? On the flip side, if a person in the store knows I can get an item at a lower price elsewhere, is it appropriate that they tell me?

For some people, the answer to both of these might be ?yes;? for others, it?s always a ?no.? For me, it?s a ?sometimes,? mostly depending on context and often depending on how outgoing I?m feeling in that moment.

On the other hand, does it really make a difference whether I?m standing in a store or not? I?m very much willing to share a deal while sitting at my computer. I often visit blogs that share deals, particularly when I?m trying to find a discount on a particular item. Friends often email me deals on things they know I?m looking for, and I do the same for them.

In both cases, context really matters. I simply wouldn?t do such a thing at my preferred local game store, for example, because I value the continued existence of that business and I know that the multitude of services they provide are subsidized by selling things at MSRP. On the other hand, at a large chain store, I?d find myself much more likely to do it, particularly if the savings is quite large.

In the end, I don?t think there?s really anything wrong with sharing bargains with other customers in a store. Much of it has to do with your own social skills and the approachability of the other person.

This brings me to another interesting situation I found myself in recently. When I was shopping at a local store, I was picking up a container of my youngest son?s favorite fruit juice when I noticed that someone had actually stuffed a coupon for the item down inside the label so that part of the coupon was hanging out of the package. Naturally, I used the coupon.

It left me thinking about the person that did this, though. Most likely, a person clipped the coupon, decided it was still too much even with the discount, and decided to leave the coupon for some other buyer (in this case, me). That seems reasonable.

I often clip a lot of coupons that I don?t use. Should I just attach them all in a similar fashion as this mystery juice shopper did for me? Perhaps I could create a culture of coupon paying-it-forward at my local grocery store.

A week later when I was at the store again, I found myself leaving behind six coupons. I just stuck them inside of labels or left them on top of packages. I?d like to think that six lucky customers found the coupons, saved some money, and then maybe one or two of them decided to help someone else save a buck as well.

I think the notion of paying it forward is really what it all comes down to. If you have a chance to share savings with someone else and feel comfortable doing so, share it. It costs you nothing, but it certainly helps the other customer. Perhaps that person will share a savings tip with another person or two and someday the savings will come back around to you.

ARTICLES MANIAC ? Infection from Dental Treatment

Dental work is a very important contributor to our on-going health and ensuring that our teeth are in tip top condition now can help to prevent any further problems from occurring down the track.

Feeling comfortable about our appearance and ensuring that we are able to easily digest our food is important and being unable to do this can have a very negative impact on your lifestyle. You could be eligible to make a compensation claim if you have been the victim of faulty dental work which has had a direct impact on your lifestyle.

Dental work is often complicated and our teeth are one area of our body where we need to take extra special care, as negligence in this area can cause our teeth to corrode and fall out, and they don?t grow back or repair in some situations which means we can frequently be left with gaping holes which are not only ugly but can make it difficult to digest even common foods.

Dental surgery is very popular and with modern innovations it has been made increasingly safe and is now a popular option for many people across the UK, but whether it?s just a simple filling or right through to a root canal, whatever the type of dental work that you are having it?s important that the utmost cleanliness and hygiene is carried out to ensure that you aren?t left with an infection.

Making an incision or drilling into a tooth are fairly common aspects of any type of dental work but if the correct precautions aren?t taken then infections can easily start to develop under the surface of the skin as a result. If your dentist is negligent towards you and you have been left with infections as a result then you could be eligible to make a claim against them to recoup any damages that you have potentially lost as a result.

Find out more about injury claims such as dental infections.

Internet Marketing For Small Business Tips - Choosing A Domain ...

HTML Ready Article. Click on the "Copy" button to copy into your clipboard.

By: Moira Wight

If you want to create an internet marketing for small business strategy for your local business you will need to have a website set up. This website needs to be a lead generation website in order to be effective as a marketing tool.

So what do we mean by lead generation website? To be an effective marketing tool for your local business the website that you have set up should be search engine optimized, and have the ability to capture the names and email addresses of those who visit it.

The first step towards an effective lead generation website is to choose a domain name for it. This is the name of your website and it also determines the address where it may be found on the internet. When you choose a domain name remember to include the main keywords that your target market will type into the search engines to find you.

Let's look at an example to illustrate more clearly what I mean. We will assume you have a local business, called Anderson Plumbing Services in the town of Membury. You certainly would not want your domain name to be the name of your business because not many people would find your site this way. You want to use the keywords which a prospective customer might type into Google to find your services, and incorporate them into a domain name. So a better example for your domain name might be memburyplumbing.com.

So now that you understand that it is important to include keywords in your domain name, where can you find out what keywords people are using when they are looking for information on local business services? Fortunately there are many tools that can help you find these words. One of these is the Google Keyword Tool. If you type the phrase "Google keyword tool" into your search bar you will find it is the first result to come up.

Type into the search box some words that you think people might be searching for such as "membury plumbing" and the tool will bring up a list of many others related to this one. You will also see some columns which tell you how many times a phrase is searched and what the competition is like for that phrase. Ideally you will want a keyword phrase that gets enough searches but for which there is not too much competition. Once you have a few domain name ideas written down you need to select a domain name registrar to see if the name you have chosen is available and register it. The domain name registrar that I use is Godaddy. Do not take any notice of all the upsells that this registrar will try and sell you. Just register the name you have chosen. It is a good idea to register your domain name for as long as you can; five years is best. The search engines are able to pick up these details and tend to take more notice of a domain name that has been registered for longer.

Now that you have a domain name that has keywords in it you will be stand a better chance at achieving an effective lead generation website as people will be able to find it more easily.

6 months later, what has Occupy protest achieved?

NEW YORK (AP) ? As spring approaches, Occupy Wall Street protesters who mostly hibernated all winter are beginning to stir with plans for renewed demonstrations six months after the movement was born.

The global protests against corporate excess and economic inequality are generally thought to have begun Sept. 17 when tents sprang up in a small granite plaza in lower Manhattan. The movement has lost steam in recent months, with media attention and donations dropping off as Occupy encampments across the country were dismantled, some by force.

On March 7, the finance accounting group in New York City reported that just about $119,000 remained in Occupy's bank account ? the equivalent of about two weeks' worth of expenses.

The Occupy movement has influenced the national dialogue about economic equality, with the word "occupy" itself becoming part of the public lexicon. In his third State of the Union address, President Barack Obama issued a populist call for income equality that echoed the movement's message. But has anything really changed in the past six months?

Some achievements that can be connected to the efforts of the Occupy movement, and some plans for the near future:

WHAT GOT DONE

In Albany, N.Y., Occupy protesters dubbed Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo "Gov. 1 Percent" for his refusal since the 2010 campaign to agree to a millionaire tax, and because his major campaign financial support comes from corporate executives.

Cuomo tried to evict Occupy Albany from the park co-owned by the city and the state. But the Democratic mayor, Gerald Jennings, agreed to allow Occupy Albany to stay on the city-owned side. Local Democratic District Attorney David Soares also announced he wouldn't prosecute anyone for disorderly conduct at Occupy Albany who might be arrested by state police ? who answer to Cuomo.

In a surprise, Cuomo reversed his position on the millionaire tax in December to avoid further cuts to schools and health care. Part of the $2 billion in revenue went to a modest but rare income tax cut of $200 to $400 for most middle class families. Cuomo refers to the millionaire tax as the biggest tax cut for the middle class in decades.

Democratic lawmakers attributed Cuomo's move in part to the Occupy protesters who had targeted him across the street from the Capitol for months and had begun demonstrating just outside his office.

___

An Atlanta pastor, whose church struggled to pay its bills after its building was struck by a 2008 tornado, credits Occupy Atlanta with helping it to avoid foreclosure. The Rev. Dexter Johnson's church, the Higher Ground Empowerment Center, took out a loan to rebuild and has struggled to pay its mortgage in recent months.

Johnson said the bank had agreed to work with the church to help pay its mortgage after demonstrations by Occupy members. Demonstrators had set up a camp at the church in Atlanta's Vine City neighborhood, just west of downtown.

In January, Johnson learned his congregation would be allowed to stay in the building.

___

In Rhode Island, Occupy Providence pushed for ? and won ? a temporary day center to serve the homeless during the winter. Protesters made the center's opening a condition of their departure from a public park downtown, where they had camped against the city's wishes for more than three months.

While the city didn't fund the center, officials pledged to help its operator, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence, find money for it.

"It shows that with pressure from people, a government can be made to move," protester Robert Malin said at the time of the center's opening.

The city had threatened legal action to remove the protesters and their tents from the park, but the two sides instead went into mediation before a judge.

___

Also in Rhode Island, the state's junior U.S. senator, Sheldon Whitehouse, introduced a bill in November to crack down on high credit card interest rates ? the same week he visited the Providence encampment. While there was no direct relationship between Occupy and the bill, Whitehouse spokesman Seth Larson said Thursday, the legislation no doubt resonated with the protesters.

"It was timely, and I'm sure the Occupy folks appreciated this bill," Larson said.

Whitehouse had introduced similar legislation a year earlier.

Occupy protesters helped save an Iraq war veteran's home from foreclosure in Atlanta, the Huffington Post reported. "I strongly believe Occupy Atlanta accelerated the process and helped save my home," Brigitte Walker, whose home activists began occupying Dec. 6, told the website. "If it had not been for them standing up, I probably wouldn't be having this happy ending." Walker had left Iraq in May 2004 when she was injured by the shock from mortar rounds, the Post reported.

Occupy Minneapolis also worked with community organizers to help a former Marine who faced eviction from his home strike a deal with his bank, the Post reported.

WHAT'S NEXT

Occupiers in New York City will commemorate the six-month mark with a rally Saturday in Zuccotti Park, where protesters camped out for months until the city ousted them in November.

Organizers are hoping donations will start to flow in as protests begin anew this spring, including a global day of "economic disruption" on May 1.

And in some states, Occupy supporters are making forays into politics. Asher Platts is running for the state senate in Maine as a "Clean Elections" candidate. Platts, an activist who attended the protests last fall, is running on an Occupy platform.

In suburban Philadelphia, Occupy protester Nathan I. Kleinman is running a write-in campaign for Congress against four-term Rep. Allyson Schwartz in the Democratic primary on April 24. The 29-year-old said he never would have mounted a run without his Occupy experience. Kleinman withdrew from the ballot after a court hearing in which Schwartz's supporters questioned some of the 1,500 required signatures he had gathered to appear on the ballot.

Oil rises above $107 amid improving US economy

SINGAPORE (AP) ? Oil prices rose above $107 a barrel Tuesday in Asia as traders bet an improving U.S. economy will boost demand at a time when the ability to increase crude production is limited.

Benchmark oil for April delivery was up 68 cents to $107.02 at midday Singapore time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.06 to settle at $106.34 per barrel in New York on Monday. Brent crude was up 19 cents at $125.53 per barrel in London.

A third straight month of strong U.S. jobs growth in February has bolstered investor confidence that the recovery in the world's biggest economy is strengthening and will eventually increase demand for crude.

The Federal Reserve is scheduled to hold a one-day policy meeting later Tuesday, and the oil market will be watching closely for any hint the central bank is considering stimulus measures to boost economic growth.

Analysts are also eyeing the possibility that global crude producers won't be able to boost output enough to match demand if Iran's 4 million barrels a day of production is cut.

"Global spare capacity has been dwindling, and crude demand is about to start rising seasonally," said Citigroup, which expects Brent to average $130 in the third quarter. "Recent developments point to higher oil prices to come and the odds of a spike to new peaks rises."

Crude has jumped from $96 last month amid investor concern that growing tensions over Iran's nuclear program could spark a military conflict that disrupts global crude supplies. Israel has said it may carry out a pre-emptive strike on Iran's nuclear capabilities while Iran has threatened to halt oil tankers in the Persian Gulf's Strait of Hormuz.

"The inflammatory rhetoric between the U.S. and Israel and Iran shows no sign of abating," Citigroup said. Israeli comments that there will be no public debate before a strike promises to keep oil elevated even if the rhetoric calms down, the bank said.

In other energy trading, heating oil rose 2.7 cents to $3.27 per gallon and gasoline futures gained 1.8 cents at $3.34 per gallon. Natural gas slid 0.5 cent at $2.26 per 1,000 cubic feet.
