Yahoo, California AG team up to fight human trafficking

SAN FRANCISCO -- Yahoo (YHOO) is teaming up with California Attorney General Kamala Harris for a new campaign aimed at raising online awareness about human trafficking.

Harris announced that starting Monday, all users entering search terms such as 'human trafficking' on Yahoo's website will be pointed toward a banner recommending they contact a national human trafficking hotline.

Human trafficking involves forcing victims into prostitution or other exploitative labor for little or no pay, often keeping them isolated, confiscating travel documents or threatening them with violence.

Harris' office is talking with other search engines about creating similar banners to direct users to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center. The hotline is operated by the Washington D.C.-based nonprofit Polaris Project and funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
