Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is not a pleasant experience.?A heartburn once in a blue moon is nothing to worry about, an antacid can easily banish that pain, but if the heartburn comes back again and again, then this could be a symptom of GERD.?When acid leaks from the stomach into the esophagus, it causes acid reflux or gastric reflux. Chronic acid reflux is called GERD.

Symptoms for GERD are heartburn, chest pain and regurgitation (which means acid washing up into your throat, which leaves a strong sour taste in your mouth that can make you cough.)

In older adults, GERD may cause breathlessness, harshness, difficulty swallowing, indigestion and vomiting.

How bad is GERD

In older adults, GERD commonly causes Esophagitis, inflammation of the esophagus. According to Livestrong, this inflammation may erode the lining of the esophagus, causing an open sore to form an ulcer that may bleed and cause pain.

This damage to the lining can lead to the formation of scar tissue, which narrows the food way and makes swallowing difficult.

Treatment For GERD

If heartburn continues to trouble you for several weeks and your condition worsens, you have to see a doctor who will give you medicines to stop the production of acid.

If your problem is severe and your age is 50+ than the doctor may also recommend? an endoscopy (internal examination of your esophagus). This test will reveal? inflammations and narrowing of the esophagus that requires different style of treatment
