JOB TITLE: Regulatory Associate

The Research Associate will join the Energy Biosciences Institute, a research organization pursuing basic and applied research in the area of cellulosic biofuels, enhanced oil recovery, microbially-enhanced fossil fuel processing and biosequestration. JOB DESCRIPTION: This is a 12-month non-tenure track Academic Professional position with possibility of renewal. The position will report directly to the Principle Investigator of the Law and Regulation: Systems Sustainability Project, Assistant Prof. Jody M. Endres.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The incumbent will be responsible for conducting legal research on Brazilian environmental, energy and agricultural law in relation to the sustainability of biomass-to-energy systems. Specific research projects will be determined as EBI research needs evolve, and may include cross-disciplinary application of theories from sociology, economics, political science, computational science, geography, urban planning and other disciplines to questions including land use, labor practices, and Brazilian regulatory systems, among others. The position thus involves:

  • Doctrinal legal research on Brazilian environment, agricultural, energy, and labor laws;
  • Writing articles for law and non-law peer journals in both English and Brazilian Portuguese;
  • Arranging collaborations with Brazilian institutions;
  • Travel to Brazil to conduct qualitative surveys; and,
  • Presentation of research results both internally and externally.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Law degree from a Brazilian university, and fluency in English and Brazilian Portuguese; work experience in the field of agriculture, environment and/or labor rights in Brazilian setting preferred; existing permission to work in the United States; must be able to reside at the University of Illinois full-time (no telecommuting).

SALARY: Commensurate with training and experience.
