Bank HSBC probed for money laundering: report

US prosecutors are looking into whether British bank HSBC was involved in laundering money for Mexican drug cartels and moving cash for Saudi Arabian banks with ties to terrorists, The New York Times reported Saturday.

Citing unnamed federal authorities with direct knowledge of the investigations, the newspaper said the investigators were also probing whether HSBC circumvented US law by transferring money through its American subsidiary for sanctioned nations, including Iran, Sudan and North Korea.

Last month, HSBC announced that its Mexico unit had paid a fine totalling 379 million Mexican pesos ($27.5 million) to Mexico's banking regulators for breaching anti-money laundering controls.

Earlier, HSBC apologized and a senior executive resigned after US lawmakers accused Europe's biggest bank of giving Iran, terrorists and drug dealers access to America's financial system.

In a 330-page report, the US Senate found the lender allowed affiliates in countries such as Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh to move billions of dollars in suspect funds into the United States without adequate controls.

The report said HSBC's Mexican affiliate "transported $7.0 billion in physical US dollars to HBUS from 2007 to 2008... raising red flags that the volume of dollars included proceeds from illegal drug sales in the United States."

According to The Times, eager to resolve the investigation, HSBC reached out to federal prosecutors in July in hopes of securing a settlement by September.

But officials said a settlement in the next couple of weeks was highly unlikely, the paper pointed out.

AP Interview: Obama on Romney's 'extreme' views

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama said Mitt Romney has locked himself into "extreme positions" on economic and social issues and would surely impose them if elected, trying to discredit his Republican rival at the biggest political moment of his life.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Obama said Romney lacks serious ideas, refuses to "own up" to the responsibilities of what it takes to be president, and deals in factually dishonest arguments that could soon haunt him in face-to-face debates.

Obama also offered a glimpse of how he would govern in a second term of divided government, insisting rosily that the forces of the election would help break Washington's stalemate. He said he would be willing to make a range of compromises with Republicans, confident there are some who would rather make deals than remain part of "one of the least productive Congresses in American history."

With the remarks, Obama set up a contrast between Romney, whom he cast as an extremist pushing staunchly conservative policies, and himself, by saying he would work across party lines. It was a seeming play for the independent voters who decide close elections and tell pollsters they want to see the often-gridlocked politicians in Washington solve the nation's problems.

Mainly, Obama was intent on countering Romney even before his challenger got to the Republican National Convention, which starts Monday in Tampa, Fla. In doing so, the president depicted his opponent as having accumulated ideas far outside the mainstream with no room to turn back.

"I can't speak to Gov. Romney's motivations," Obama said. "What I can say is that he has signed up for positions, extreme positions, that are very consistent with positions that a number of House Republicans have taken. And whether he actually believes in those or not, I have no doubt that he would carry forward some of the things that he's talked about."

Obama spoke to the AP on Thursday before heading off to a long weekend with his family at Camp David, the secluded presidential retreat in the Maryland mountains.

The president was at ease but doggedly on script, steering even personal-themed questions about Romney and running mate Paul Ryan into answers about starkly different visions for helping the middle class.

Romney, a successful former executive of a private equity firm and one-time Massachusetts governor, will introduce himself to a TV audience of millions next Thursday as he takes the convention stage to accept his party's presidential nomination. He has offered himself as a business-minded alternative to Obama and has seized on voter concerns about joblessness and the direction of the nation.

Nearly 10 weeks before Election Day, the race is remarkably stable and reflective of a sharply divided nation, with registered voters about evenly split on their choice and nearly a quarter of them unsure or still willing to change their mind. Across the interview, Obama's messages often seemed directed at moderate and independent voters whose sway could make the difference.

Obama's depiction of a Romney presidency grew most pointed when he was asked if his Republican challenger has no core, as one of Obama's top advisers once put it.

The president suggested that whatever Romney really stands for in life is secondary to the promises Romney has made in the campaign.

In explaining his accusation of "extreme" positions, the president cited Romney's call for across-the-board tax cuts that Obama said would mostly help the rich at the expense of everyone else and cost the nation $5 trillion. Obama singled out Romney's opposition to tax credits for producers of wind energy, the kind of issue that carries large political resonance in a battleground state such as Iowa.

And Obama alluded to the provocative issue of abortion, suddenly thrust to the fore this week when Republican Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin said the female body has a way to "shut that whole thing down" when a woman is the victim of "legitimate rape."

The Republican platform in Tampa calls for a ban on abortion with no specific exceptions for rape or other circumstances. Obama predicted that a President Romney would not "stand in the way" if Congress gave him a bill that stripped away women's control over their reproductive health.

Romney is on record, however, as not opposing abortion in cases of rape and incest or if it will save the mother's life.

Polling shows social issues such as abortion represent perhaps Obama's best opportunity to draw support from Romney. Obama already holds a broad lead as the candidate more trusted to handle those social issues among Democrats and independents. The issue is one of Romney's biggest vulnerabilities among moderate and liberal Republicans.

Obama also sought to chip away at Romney's trustworthiness, taking fresh shots at Romney's refusal to release years of tax returns for public inspection. He said that position was indicative of a candidate who has a "lack of willingness to take responsibility for what this job entails."

Yet it is the economy that has driven this election and has dominated Obama's message of a middle-class revival.

"We aren't where we need to be. Everybody agrees with that," said Obama, who inherited an economy in free fall and now bears responsibility for a recovery that remains weak. "But Gov. Romney's policies would make things worse for middle-class families and offer no prospect for long-term opportunity for those striving to get into the middle class," the president said.

A Romney spokesman, Ryan Williams, jumped on Obama's account in the interview that the economy clearly needs to get better. "Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan agree," Williams said. "The American people know they aren't better off than they were four years ago."

Obama holds a decisive advantage over Romney when Americans are asked who better understands their daily woes. Yet nearly two-thirds of people in a new AP-GfK poll say the economy is in poor shape, and 60 percent say the country is headed in the wrong direction.

Obama expressed confidence that even voters whose lives have not improved during his term will stick with him as they assess the two candidates.

"If they saw Gov. Romney offering serious proposals that offered some sort of concrete ways in which middle-class families would be helped, then I could understand them thinking about that choice," Obama said. "But that's not what's happening."

And therein lies the central case that Obama made in the interview, as he has made for months, and as he will again at his own party's convention in Charlotte, N.C., in early September.

Obama said he is the candidate whose policies have historically helped the middle class on issues that people care about and that shape the economy ? education, manufacturing, science and research, Medicare, debt reduction, tax rates, health care, consumer protection, college aid, energy.

Williams, the Romney spokesman, responded that Obama has piled up national debt and presided over high unemployment. "Too many middle-class families are going to sleep each night worried," he said. "This may be the best President Obama can do, but it's not the best America can do."

The moment that could finally shake up a close race could come in the three debates Obama and Romney hold in October. The president said Romney could run into trouble because of arguments that are not backed up by facts, citing a widely debunked television ad campaign in which Romney accuses Obama of gutting the work requirement in the federal welfare law.

"It will be a little tougher to defend face-to-face," Obama said.

Obama's view of a different second-term dynamic in Washington, even if both he and House Republicans retain power, seems a stretch given the stalemated politics of a divided government. He said two changes ? the facts that "the American people will have voted," and that Republicans will no longer need to be focused on beating him ? could lead to better conditions for deal-making.

If Republicans are willing, Obama said, "I'm prepared to make a whole range of compromises" that could even rankle his own party. But he did not get specific.

The 25-minute interview, conducted in the library of the White House residence, was part of a multi-faceted campaign by Obama's team to snag some of the spotlight during Romney's big week. Obama denied the notion, widely if quietly held in political circles, that the fiercely competitive president is also driven to beat Romney because he does not hold him in high regard.

"I don't really know him well," Obama said. "The big arguments that I have with Gov. Romney have to do with where we take this country forward."

Superior fuel cell material developed

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? Using a mixture of gold, copper and platinum nanoparticles, IBN researchers have developed a more powerful and longer lasting fuel cell material. This breakthrough was published recently in the journal, Energy and Environmental Science.

Fuel cells are a promising technology for use as a source of electricity to power electronic devices, vehicles, military aircraft and equipment. A fuel cell converts the chemical energy from hydrogen (fuel) into electricity through a chemical reaction with oxygen. A fuel cell can produce electricity continuously as long as there is a fuel supply.

Current commercially available fuel cells use platinum nanoparticles as the catalyst to speed up the chemical reaction because platinum is the only metal that can resist the highly acidic conditions inside such a cell. However, the widespread use of fuel cells has been impeded by the high cost of platinum and its low stability.

To overcome this limitation, a team of researchers led by IBN Executive Director Professor Jackie Y. Ying has discovered that by replacing the central part of the catalyst with gold and copper alloy and leaving just the outer layer in platinum, the new hybrid material can provide 5 times higher activity and much greater stability than the commercial platinum catalyst. With further optimization, it would be possible to further increase the material's catalytic properties.

IBN's new nanocomposite material can produce at least 0.571 amperes of electric current per milligram of platinum, compared to 0.109 amperes per milligram of platinum for commercial platinum catalysts. This is also the first time that a catalyst has been shown to enhance both the stability and activity for the fuel cell reaction with a significantly reduced platinum content.

To make this catalyst more active than the commercial platinum catalyst, the researchers have designed the core of the nanocrsytalline material to be a gold-copper alloy, which has slightly smaller lattice spacing than the platinum coating on the nanocrystal's surface. This creates a compressive strain on the surface platinum atoms, making the platinum more active in the rate-limiting step of oxygen reduction reaction for the fuel cell. Replacing the core of the nanoparticle with the less expensive gold-copper alloy cuts down the usage of platinum, a highly expensive noble metal.

Professor Ying said, "A key research focus at IBN is to develop green energy technologies that can lead to greater efficiency and environmental sustainability. More active and less costly than conventional platinum catalysts, our new nanocomposite system has enabled us to significantly advance fuel cell development and make the technology more practical for industrial applications."

PORT CHARLOTTE - A California company has bought three car dealership buildings in Charlotte County for $7 million.

Conant Properties X LLLP, a Newport Beach, Calif., company, financed the purchase with a $5.6 million loan from Comerica Bank.

The seller was Charlotte HVW Limited Partnership, a Louisville, Ky.-based company managed by Tracy W. Farmer, records show.

Included in the deal were the 142,476-square foot Honda showroom at 1252 Tamiami Trail, a 51,776-square-foot Honda of Port Charlotte building at 645 Woodbury Drive and the 10,371-square-foot Volkwagen showroom at 665 Woodbury Drive, records show.

Another, much smaller dealership property in the region changed hands in May.

C Romano Properties LLC, a Bradenton company managed by John B. Cravens, sold a 2,000-square-foot, auto dealership office building at 8451 Tamiami Trail in southern Manatee County to Captain Brian's Seafood Market Inc. for $250,000 and provided the buyer with a $200,000 loan.

Captain Brian's, a Sarasota company managed by Brian Bochan, already owned an 8,800-square-foot seafood market and restaurant next door at 8421 Tamiami Trail that it bought for $750,000 in April 2003.

Iran envoy expects 'progress' in IAEA talks

Iran's envoy to the UN atomic watchdog said that he expected "progress" in talks Friday in which the agency wants to press Tehran to address suspicions of covert nuclear weapons research work.

"We are expecting progress at this meeting," Tehran's envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Ali Asghar Soltanieh, told reporters as he went into the meeting, the first since June, at Iran's embassy in Vienna.

"The fact that we are continuing these talks with the agency indicates that we are determined to move to a positive conclusion.... Both sides are trying to bridge the gap," he said, without elaborating.

The IAEA wants Iran to address evidence it has amassed suggesting that at least until 2003, and possibly since, Tehran carried out "activities relevant to the development of a nuclear explosive device."

The IAEA wants access to specific documents and to scientists involved in Iran's programme, as well as to sites, including the Parchin military base near Tehran, which it visited twice in 2005 but now wants to look at again.

Iran rejects Western accusations that it is seeking to develop atomic weapons and says that its nuclear programme is peaceful.

Iran has said it will meet the agency's demands if this forms part of a wider arrangement governing relations between Iran and the watchdog that experts and diplomats say would limit to an unacceptable degree the IAEA's inspection rights.

The IAEA has also made several fruitless visits to Iran this year, and agency head Yukiya Amano said Wednesday he was not "optimistic" about this latest effort, which comes amid fevered speculation of military strikes by Israel.

Going into Friday's talks the IAEA's chief inspector, Herman Nackaerts, told reporters he wanted to "seek agreement on a structured approach to resolve all the outstanding issues."

He added: "And of course we will also ask Iran where they are with their responses to our requests for access to Parchin and other questions that we have asked Iran."

The meeting comes ahead of the release, possibly next week, of the IAEA's latest quarterly report on Iran which is expected to show that Tehran is continuing to expand its nuclear programme despite sanctions and talk of war.

Western diplomats told AFP they expected the report to say that Iran had installed but not yet started operating more centrifuges to enrich uranium to purities of 20 percent at its Fordo facility, set in a mountain near Qom.

Enriched uranium is the main concern of the international community because it can be used not only in power generation and for medical isotopes but when purified to 90 percent also in the explosive core of a nuclear bomb.

Salesforce third-quarter forecast disappoints, shares drop

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Enterprise software provider Salesforce.com Inc issued a weak third-quarter earnings outlook on Thursday that raised investor concerns about heightened competition from rivals and helped push its shares 5 percent lower in after-hours trade.

The San Francisco-based company beat analysts' estimates for fiscal second-quarter profit and revenue. But it forecast third-quarter earnings of 31 or 32 cents per share, short of the 34 cents expected by analysts.

A price war is cutting into the software maker's margins as it faces competition from Oracle Corp and SAP for big corporate clients and Citrix Systems Inc with smaller businesses, said Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry.

"The competitive environment is getting more intense," Chowdhry said.

San Francisco-based Salesforce reported a net loss of $9.9 million, or 7 cents a share, for its second quarter, ended July 31, double the $4.3 million, or 3 cents a share, loss from a year earlier. Excluding certain items, it earned 42 cents a share, beating the 39 cents expected on average by Wall Street, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Chief Executive Marc Benioff, a former top executive at Oracle, has invested heavily in recent quarters to expand his company's social media offerings. Earlier this month, Salesforce closed its $689 million acquisition of Buddy Media, a social media marketing platform.

Shares of Salesforce slid 5.3 percent after hours to $139 after closing at $146.77 on the New York Stock Exchange.

You see them on Twitter. You get them on Google. Now advertisements are in your Facebook search results. And that's in addition to the ads "Hot Singles in your Area" and "David's Bridal" you're already getting on the right side of your Facebook profile.?

On Wednesday, Facebook officially?launched its Sponsored Results?advertising?tools to its third parties. The service, which has been in beta testing for months, "is a great way for you to drive more awareness of your app, page or place," the social network announced?on its Developer's Blog.?Sponsored searches?allow marketers to attach ads to the various keywords you search for on the social network, so that their ads show up with your results.?

Try a? Facebook search for "Vegas," for example, and?the "Sponsored" ad for Facebook game "Lucky Slots" comes back as the top result, followed by unsponsored apps, places and pages on Facebook. A search for "Games" returns the "Sponsored" Facebook game?BINGO Blitz. And search for Taylor Swift, as Tina Moore, this one lady I know from Facebook did, and oddly enough, you get a "Sponsored" result for Match.com. ("I guess that means she's single," Tina speculates. ?Really, it probably means Match.com bought the search term "Taylor Swift" ... though?that girl?does?have a lot of romantic troubles.)

If this seems familiar to you, it's the same sort of ad algorithm that made Google its advertising mint. The difference here is, if you click the link on Facebook, it won't take you out of the social network's gated community -- at least for now. Instead, you'll be directed to the company or product's home on Facebook. For example, click the "Sponsored" ad for Match.com, and you''ll find yourself on Match.com's Facebook page, not the online dating website itself.??

The "Sponsored" results are fairly unobtrusive in their current form, and clearly labeled as advertisements. That's important. Nobody's tricking you into?you click on them.?

If you're wondering why even more advertisements are necessary on Facebook, with or without its plummeting IPO, remember the words of Sen. Al Franken in his speech for American Bar Association's Antitrust Section?earlier this year. When it comes to Facebook, and Google too, "free" services?that make a crazy amount of?money from the personal info you so willingly supply,?"you are not their client, you are their product."

TMZ reports that Solo?s ?Dancing with the Stars? partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy has vehemently denied the U.S. goalkeeper?s unflattering allegations about him in her new book.

In her book ?Solo: A Memoir of Hope,? she alleges that Chmerkovskiy ?manhandled me in rehearsals from the start, pushing me, whacking my stomach, bending my arms roughly. I thought that was just how it went ? how dancers worked with each other. But it kept getting worse. One day, Maks was trying to put me in a certain position and hit my stomach so hard with his open palm that I had a red handprint there for the rest of the day.?

Man City recovers to open title defense with win

LONDON (AP) -Manchester City fought back after a second-half collapse against Southampton to open its title defense with a 3-2 victory against the Premier League newcomers on Sunday.

Substitutes Rickie Lambert and Steven Davis put a dogged Southampton side 2-1 in front and wipe out Carlos Tevez's opener for City.

But Samir Nasri spared City from an opening weekend upset by scoring an 80th-minute winner following Edin Dzeko's equalizer.

"We showed great character," Nasri told Sky Sports television. "We didn't panic."

Chelsea had no such troubles overcoming Wigan in Sunday's other match.

New signing Eden Hazard made an immediate impact, setting up Branislav Ivanovic's opener and winning the penalty from which Frank Lampard converted to clinch a 2-0 victory.

For City, the new season picked up where the last one ended for pulsating drama at Etihad Stadium. A 3-2 victory in May against Queens Park Rangers - secured in the final seconds - ended City's 44-year title drought.

"It was like the last game of the season, we've started the same and I hope at the end it will be the same result for us," Nasri said.

Although City didn't leave it until stoppage time on Sunday to produce the winner, manager Roberto Mancini hopes every game won't be as tough.

"It is important to have this character, it is better the next time to close the game," Mancini said. "We had too many chances to close the game - we didn't."

City had to cope without Sergio Aguero from the 14th minute after last season's top scorer fell awkwardly following Nathaniel Clyne's challenge. The Argentina striker went to hospital for a scan on his injured knee, but the results won't be known for another two days.

City's fortunes didn't improve after Aguero's injury. Even though Tevez won a penalty two minutes later, after falling to the ground under Jos Hooiveld's challenge, David Silva's tame spot kick was easily saved by Kelvin Davis.

Tevez found the target five minutes before halftime. He was fed through by Nasri and sneaked in front of Joe Fonte before sending the ball into the net at Davis' near post.

City squandered chances to extend its lead after the break, with Gael Clichy sweeping the ball over, and David Silva hitting the crossbar.

City was made to pay for those misses when Lambert, last season's top scorer in the second tier, scored his first topflight goal.

Four minutes after coming off the bench, Lambert seized on confusion in the City defense and Joleon Lescott's missed clearance to side-foot the ball past goalkeeper Joe Hart.

Another substitute also quickly delivered. Steven Davis had been on the pitch only three minutes when he buried the ball into the bottom corner of the net in the 68th after City debutant Jack Rodwell had lost possession to Southampton inside his own half.

But City recovered from its sloppiness, with Dzeko blasting in the equalizer four minutes later.

Nasri secured the three points after Southampton left back Danny Fox inadvertently headed the ball to the France midfielder, who was booked for lifting his jersey in the goal celebration to reveal a t-shirt with the "`Eid Mubarak" greeting to mark the end of Ramadan.

"We deserved to win the game," Mancini said. "They didn't have any chances in the first half and we had four or five incredible chances."

Chelsea made a surging start at Wigan following its tepid league campaign last year in which it finished sixth but made amends by winning the Champions League and FA Cup.

Roberto Di Matteo's side was in front after just two minutes, with Hazard turning Ivan Ramis and slipping the ball through for Ivanovic to race onto and dispatch into the Wigan net.

"(Hazard) was brilliant," Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard said. "It's a young age to come into the Premier League, no matter how good of a player you are."

Ramis was struggling to cope with Hazard and gave away a penalty when he fouled the Belgium international just five minutes after Ivanovic's opener.

Lampard scored from the spot, but the Blues couldn't build on the margin of the victory as Wigan finished with nothing to show for its domination.

"They took their chances really well, they punished us massively," Wigan manager Roberto Martinez said. "It couldn't have been a harder test ... I thought Chelsea were happy to defend well and run the clock down, and I took that as a real compliment to the side."

Manchester United's quest for a 20th title doesn't start until Monday, when former Arsenal striker Robin van Persie will hope to make his debut at Everton.

Everton's neighbor, Liverpool, was on the receiving end of the biggest shock of the opening weekend, with Brendan Rodgers' new side losing 3-0 at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.
