Auction of Custom 2014 Ford Mustang GT Nets $398,000 For Youth Aviation Program

Ford has a long history of aviation-inspired names in its model lineup, from the Thunderbird to the Falcon, and the Mustang. To help support the Experimental Aircraft Association?s Young Eagles program, Ford offered a one-of-a-kind customized 2014 Mustang GT with VIN 0001 to support the organization?s efforts in youth aviation educational efforts. The car auctioned for $398,000 at the EAA AirVenture show to raise money for the program.

The car features a custom-painted exterior featuring red and black accent painting inspired by the Air Force Thunderbirds? F-16 Falcon planes, widebody front and rear fenders, a custom-painted belly pan, and Forgiato 22-inch wheels. On the inside, the car gets Recaro seats embroidered with Thunderbirds design elements, custom door sill plates, and puddle lamps that project an aircraft silhouette when the doors open. Adding to the driving excitement is a Ford Racing supercharger, a suspension handling pack, and Brembo high-performance brakes.

The car is VIN 0001 of the 2014 Mustang GTs, and is one of several Mustangs auctioned for the benefit of the Young Eagles program. In 2008, a special-edition Mustang AV8R sold for $500,000. Altogether, proceeds from Ford vehicles have raised more than $2.5 million to support the Young Eagles program.

Rescuers find body of Mt. Hood snowboarder

MOUNT HOOD, Ore. (AP) ? Authorities say rescuers have recovered the body of a Colorado snowboarder killed when an ice tunnel collapsed on Oregon's Mount Hood.

Collin Backowski had been missing since the tunnel collapsed Saturday afternoon. Five of his companions survived and managed to call for help, but they were unable to dig through the thick ice and snow to reach him.

About a dozen searchers armed with chain saws and other tools resumed looking for the 25-year-old early Sunday, and reached his body at about 8:45 a.m. under about 10 feet of snow.

Hood River County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Tiffany Peterson says the searchers had to remove tons of snow and ice by hand.

Operation 'Dragon Lady' Uncovers Huge Russian Android SMS Fraud Network

LAS VEGAS ? Ten Russian organizations have tricked thousands of victims into downloading fake Android apps that send premium text messages, each costing from $3 to $18, according to a Lookout Security investigation called Operation "Dragon Lady."

The network is comprised of 10 organizations that create the malware ? which makes up 30% of all malware detected by Lookout in 2013 so far ? as well as thousands of affiliates that make up a vast distribution and marketing network. The affiliates use several techniques, including fake Twitter accounts, to reach as many victims as possible ? and they rack up big profits doing so. Some regularly earn more than $10,000 a month.

Lookout revealed the malware operation in a talk at the DefCon hacking conference on Friday, after launching its investigation last December.

In addition to creating malicious apps, the 10 organizations ? dubbed "Malware HQs" by Lookout ? establish websites that offer affiliates an easy-to-configure platform to develop fake apps and download sites, themselves. What's more, all of this is done on the open Internet.

"These are not guys operating in the shadows," Ryan Smith, senior researcher at Lookout, explained to Mashable. "They're operating in a fairly public manner."

To become an affiliate, an individual simply has to fill out an online form, customize the app with pre-set options, and then copy and paste code into their distribution websites. Basically, no technical knowledge is needed.

The distributors then use Twitter to promote links to fake, free versions of apps that normally cost money, popular apps such as Skype and Opera, or simply porn and MP3s. Victims click, download and typically get an app that redirects them to a website while, in the background, actually sends out premium-rate text messages to phone numbers set up by the Malware HQs. The fraudsters then collect the money, and give a slice of the profit to affiliates.

The Malware HQs operate like a real business, Smith said, providing regular updates, customer service and online assistance to the affiliates. They also offer gamification features to motivate them, publishing rankings online and giving out rewards to the best distributors.

The campaign only focuses on Russia and its neighboring countries, as some of the distributing websites block out traffic that comes from outside these areas. Smith said this is likely because it's easier to maintain a localized business, and that "these affiliates like to be paid out in a very timely way" ? something that's easier to achieve in Russia, where phone customers have a short window of time to dispute charges on their bills.

Still, frauds like these can also be reproduced in other countries, and users should be cautious when clicking on links in their smartphone browsers.

"Don't click on any links you don't trust, don't download any applications from sites you don't trust," Smith said, adding that people should also avoid installing apps from third-party sites, and only use Google Play, whenever possible.

As a general rule, being vigilant will help users steer clear of sites promising free apps that normally cost money. "If something seems like it's too good to be true," Smith said, "It probably is too good to be true."

Sony ends support for PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale

Sony?s Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that it has ceased active development for mascot-driven fighting game PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.

The news, conveyed on the All-Stars blog, confirmed that no additional playable characters or background environments will be released for the game, but that previously exclusive DLC will be made available.

Starting on August 27, players will be able to get their hands on the formerly US-only pre-order skins for Dante, Raiden, Heihachi, and Big Daddy. A balance patch that will tweak player strength, weakness, and functionality is planned for later this year, and will coincide with free costumes for Zeus, as well as Dead Space?s Isaac Clarke.

The game?s new developer confirmed that it is currently exploring issues with title belts being incorrectly awarded, and moving forward, will reset leaderboards on a monthly basis, as well as introduce new community events.

The post also addressed recent rumours about Journey- and Gravity Rush-themed stages, as well as Legend of Dragoon character, Dart, saying that legal barriers may have stopped certain items being implemented in the game.

"In the course of any game's development, there are always elements that never quite get finished or the team decides not to use in the final game. Some of these additional materials from the game?s development phase have been recently released, but unfortunately, these are very far from finished assets and were not included in the final game for a number of production and legal reasons," the statement said.

In February this year, Sony severed ties with the game's original developer, SuperBot Entertainment, which saw the studio lay off part of its team.

How To Improve Your Time Management Skills Using 5 Simple Tips ...

If you always find yourself late for work, school or an appointment ? or you often fail to finish your tasks ? then you need to learn how to improve your time management skills.

It?s not that hard, although it might seem that way at first. Habits can be tough to break; but if you stick to your regimen for at least 21 days, then you have a good chance of developing a new habit: one that makes sure you?re always on time.

Learn how to manage your time better using these 5 simple tips below:

Tip # 1: Schedule Your Day.

If you want to learn how to improve your time management skills, then you need to have a concrete schedule for the day. Don?t get out of bed thinking that you?ll just wing it, because it often leads to a lot of time wastage.

It would be best to schedule and plan your tasks the night before, because your subconscious mind will help process their fulfillment while you?re sleeping.

Tip # 2: Create A Check List.

If you have deadlines coming up, then you need to create a list arranged according to priority. This helps keep you on track and even encourages you to do more as fast as possible. There?s nothing like a list to keep you motivated and pressured to do your job.

Tip # 3: Do Everything Faster.

I know this sounds like something your irrational boss would say, but doing things faster is quite a legitimate solution to manage your time effectively.

Cooking breakfast, for example, can be done a lot faster if you?ve prepared the meal the night before. Getting to work might also be done faster if you stopped to refill the fuel in your tank on your way home from work.

Tip # 4: Stop Wasting Time.

Spacing out for even just five minutes is a waste of time. Not taking a shortcut is also a waste of time. If you want to learn how to improve your time management skills, then you need to cut down on the activities that aren?t related to work.

Chatting with your co-workers is fine; but perhaps you need to cut down on that too, especially if you have a deadline to meet.

Tip # 5: Learn To Multi-task.

Multi-tasking is not always advisable, especially if the tasks you?re doing need your full concentration. In smaller tasks, however, I?m sure you can do more than one thing at a time. Want some examples?

How about reading a book while waiting for the food you?re cooking to boil? Cleaning your room while talking to your parents is another way you can multi-task. And perhaps one of the best multi-tasking activities you can do is listening to motivational CDs while driving your car.

You probably didn?t have any lessons on how to improve your time management skills when you were still studying in school. There might have been seminars, yes, but it is from experience that you really learn how to make good use of your time.

To help you achieve your dreams fast, I?d like to give you instant access to more than 100 of the best free self-improvement ebooks that could greatly change your life! Download them free at http://www.20daypersuasion.com/goldaccess.htm

GOLF NOTEBOOK: Milford's Steve Sokol putting family ahead of golf

There was a time when golf was the single most important thing in Steve Sokol?s life. He carried the same ultimate goal most young golfers do: reach the PGA Tour.

Sokol didn?t reach that ultimate goal, but now 34, the Milford resident is pretty content with how things turned out.

?A lot of it seems like it was yesterday and there are times where it seems like it was 50 years ago,? Sokol said. ?So much in my life has changed.?

?It? was the 2003 Connecticut Open, the biggest golf tournament in the state each year outside of the Travelers Championship. He hasn?t missed a cut in the event since, except for not playing in it in 2004. Last week, he shot a 68 in the final round of the 79th Connecticut Open at Torrington Country Club to finish seventh and gain an exemption into next year?s Open at Rolling Hills CC in Wilton.

If you knew Sokol then and now, you may be amazed by the change. Before the Open, he had played just six rounds all year.

So what did he do to prepare for the Open? ?I hit balls once and chipped and putted two or three times,? he said.

Sokol was the Register Area MVP for golf in 1998 out of Ansonia High, then played collegiate golf at both Old Dominion and Florida Southern. He played on the mini-tours and overseas with some success, none bigger than the 2003 Open.

?I did have some success,? Sokol said. ?I played pretty well, I had my chances. I didn?t always take advantage of them. I thought I?d be good enough to do this and keep going.?

In 2004, he qualified for the U.S. Open and played well for a time over the first two rounds before missing the cut. Not too long after that, he tore a ligament in his left thumb.

?It bothered me pretty bad at Q School (the PGA Tour?s qualifying school),? Sokol said. ?I couldn?t take the top off a chapstick or a water bottle. I probably shouldn?t have been playing at that point, but you try to play because it?s tour school and your one shot for the year.? Continued...

Sokol made it through the first stage of Q School four times, but never past the second stage. He had thumb surgery soon after that particular year?s Q School attempt. But Sokol admitted he ?probably came back too quickly? and made adjustments to his swing to compensate for the recovery.

He continued to compete after he healed and after he met his future wife Aileen. Eventually, he became a father to Stephen, now 3 1/2 and Jackson, almost 2, and golf fell on his priority list.

?Back then, that?s all I did, that?s all that mattered. I didn?t have any bigger responsibilities other than myself and playing golf,? Sokol said. ?Now I have two jobs, two young kids, a wife, bills and the things that go along with that. So golf is now pretty far down the bottom on the priority list.?

Sokol is an assistant pro at Orange Hills CC and took over as the head golf coach at Division II Post in Waterbury in February. Both jobs, and a family, has given Sokol an entirely new perspective.

?I wouldn?t trade my life right now with my wife and my kids for anything,? Sokol said. ?Even when I was playing in college, my goal was to make enough and play well enough to be able to still enjoy being with my kids.?

Barone, Boynton advance to regional

Amanda Barone of Woodbridge and Finn Boynton of Milford both advanced to a regional qualifier for the Drive, Chip and Putt nation-wide competition.

On July 18 in local qualifying at Triggs Municipal GC in Providence, R.I., Barone recorded the highest score in her age bracket (14-15) with 124 points. Boynton did the same in his bracket (14-15) with 141 points.

The regional qualifier will be held Aug. 12 at Pinehills GC in Plymouth, Mass. The top qualifier in each age/gender bracket will advance to the competition?s national championship, which will be held April 6, 2014 at Augusta National Golf Club.

U.S. Women?s Amateur Continued...

Isabelle Lendl of Goshen is the only golfer from Connecticut who qualified for the U.S. Women?s Amateur beginning Monday at CC of Charleston in Charleston, S.C.

Lendl goes off the first hole at 12:50 p.m. Monday and off the 10th hole Tuesday at 7:50 a.m. The low 64 players from the 36 holes of stroke play advance to match play beginning Wednesday.

Megan Khang, the reigning two-time Connecticut Women?s Open champion who lives in Rockland, Mass., goes off the 10th hole at 2:30 p.m. Monday and the first hole Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.

'Stand Your Ground' law hearings

By Tom Brown

MIAMI (Reuters) - Florida lawmakers will hold hearings this fall on the state's "Stand Your Ground" self-defense law, which has become a lightning rod for criticism following the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin.

The announcement on Friday by Will Weatherford, the speaker of Florida's House of Representatives, marked the biggest concession yet by the state's Republican leaders to protesters' demands for a top-to-bottom review of the law, which allows people in fear of serious injury to use deadly force to defend themselves rather than retreat.

Since Zimmerman's acquittal on July 13, Martin's grieving parents, backed by African-American civic leaders, celebrities, students and political figures, including President Barack Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder, have all said the Stand Your Ground law needs to be re-examined.

Weatherford, in an opinion column published in the Tampa Tribune, said he had asked Representative Matt Gaetz, a fellow Republican who chairs the House Criminal Justice Subcommittee, to lead the hearings. Weatherford did not set a date for the hearings or say how long they would last.

"Across Florida, representatives are receiving calls, letters, visits and emails from constituents with diverse opinions on 'Stand Your Ground,'" Weatherford said. "Passions are high, but every person has the right to express their views on this matter of great importance."

"It's a critical step," said Phillip Agnew, who heads a group of young demonstrators calling themselves the Dream Defenders who have staged a nearly month-long sit-in outside Governor Rick Scott's office in a bid to change the law. "We're excited about having an open debate," he told Reuters.

Advocates of the law, the first of its kind in the country and now copied in more than 20 other states, say violent crime has fallen since it was enacted.

But critics see the self-defense law as emblematic of racial bias and unequal justice in America, since some studies have shown that defense claims made under the law are far more likely to be successful when the victim is black.

Two of the six jurors in the Zimmerman case have said the Stand Your Ground law left them with no option but to acquit him.

"Our evaluation of its (the law's) effectiveness should be guided by objective information, not by political expediency," Weatherford wrote.

"Does the law keep the innocent safer? Is it being applied fairly? Are there ways we can make this law clearer and more understandable?" he asked.

Most U.S. voters support the "Stand Your Ground" laws, although the question of whether to retreat or use deadly force in self defense divides Americans along gender, racial and political lines, a national Quinnipiac University poll found on Friday.

The poll found that a strong majority of white voters and men support the laws, while black voters generally oppose them and women are almost evenly divided.

Samsung Galaxy Mega (6.3) video walkthrough

Galaxy Mega

There are smartphones, and then there’s the Megaphone

In case you’ve neglected to notice, smartphones are getting bigger, and in 2013 in particular we’ve seen manufacturers push past the six-inch screen mark and into the bizarre no man’s land between phones and tablets.

The Samsung Galaxy Mega is one such device, with a titanic 6.3-inch display. On the face of things, it’s essentially an oversized Galaxy S4, in the same way the S4 Mini is an undersized Galaxy S4. But there’s more to it than that, and the result of Samsung’s efforts is a product that’s closer to a highly portable mid-range tablet than a smartphone. (Though it’s perfectly capable of making calls, should you desire to do so.)

Check out our video walkthrough after the break, and be sure to share your own thoughts on this 6.3-inch megaphone down in the comments.

97% Blackfish

All Critics (73) | Top Critics (23) | Fresh (71) | Rotten (2)

Informative, earnest, but less than briskly paced.

"Blackfish" makes a compelling case that the cruelty of life in captivity is the cause for a rash of fatal attacks by orcas on their trainers, aggressive behavior that no so-called killer whale ever has exhibited in the wild.

Its ultimate message is clear: Killer whales belong with their families in their natural habitat, not performing for audiences. After listening to this film's many impassioned voices, it's hard to argue.

It not only delivers astonishing, suspenseful footage that makes it a legitimate thriller, but also serves up thoughtful meditations about using wild animals for our own entertainment.

It's hard to imagine anyone coming out of this movie and not swearing off the next vacation trip to Orlando, San Antonio or San Diego.

Unfortunately, this feels like a ten-minute news segment blown up to theatrical proportions.

An engrossing look at animal behavior.

It is gripping and thought-provoking.

As enlightening and passionate as the picture is, Cowperthwaite fails to summon the type of comprehensive journalism this type of story deserves.

The one save-the-whales movie to see when you only have time for one.

There aren't too many animal-rights documentaries that could be described as "metal," but Blackfish, one part horror movie and one part nature film, fits the bill and then some.

Cowperthwaite juxtaposes to devastating effect official PR spin with news reports and eye-witness accounts of marine park tragedies.

[An] impressive, often gripping documentary ...

Engrossing when offers alarming CSI-type forensic analysis into the death of a whale trainer [but] the narrow focus on SeaWorld raises more questions that aren't considered.

Through interviews with whale scientists and several former Sea World trainers, [Cowperthwaite] paints a disturbing picture of the profit-minded climate of deceit that prevailed at the company.

Puts 'killer whales' into wildlife and humanitarian perspective while giving you all of the dangerous action sequences you could possible want. Free Willy, it ain't.

Blackfish marries biography, activism and psycho thriller into a pleasing cinematic shape, starting with a single whale and the trainers who worked with him.

Some of the archive footage is exceedingly harrowing, but the case against commercially condoned cruelty is made without sensationalism, and few will be able to watch this without a growing sense of outrage.

Cruelty begets cruelty and whales don't belong in the circus.

It is never less than gripping, and devastatingly undermines the notion of performing whales as wholesome family entertainment.

4 Vital System Tools Every Windows User Should Know About

4 Vital System Tools Every Windows User Should Know About

Not sure why your computer keeps crashing? Investigate ? all while getting to know your Windows system better ? using built-in tools that come with Windows. If you?ve been afraid to poke around your system and figure out how to maintain it, don?t fear: it?s simpler than you think.

There are plenty of articles on this very site pointing out third-party tools for maintaining your Windows system. What we occasionally overlook, however, are the tools Windows provides out of the box for doing the same things. Sure, they may be less feature-filled than some of the downloadable options ? but they do the job, and are generally not hard to use. Whether you need to quickly check a friend?s machine for problems or look over your own, knowing where to find tools for scanning your hard drive and memory can?t hurt ? and neither can some basic diagnostic tools.

This list is by no means definitive, but it does point to tools essential for anyone hoping to solve problems on a Windows system.

Task Manager

Is your computer suddenly slow? There?s probably a new, or recently upgraded, app that?s using up way too many system resources. Find out which one it is and shut it down with Task Manager, an app every aspiring Windows expert should learn to use.

What It Does

  • Shows an overview of resource usage, broken down by process.

  • Allows you to force any application to quit, necessary when an application simply won?t close.
  • Shows overall system performance, from CPU to Memory to the network. Perfect if you want to know which bottleneck is slowing down your system ? and what you should perhaps look into upgrading.

  • In Windows 8, allows you to control which apps do and do not load at system startup.
  • In Windows 8, shows you which users are using up the most resources

How To Find It

The easiest way to start up Task Manager, in every version of Windows, is a simple keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Alternatively, you can use Alt + Ctrl + Delete, then select Task Manager.

You?ll also find Task Manager in the Start Menu, under Accessories, for Windows 7 and earlier. Windows 8 users can search for the program using the Search gem.

Want to know more about the task manager? Check out these features:

Resource & Performance Monitor

Know something is wrong with your system, but not sure where to start? The Resource and Performance Monitor could give you hints.

What It Does

  • A powerful diagnostic tool bundled with Windows 7 and 8. Scans your computer and points out potential issues.
  • Automatically scans your system?s major components, including CPU, hard drive and memory (RAM).
  • Shows potential problems with the operating system, including continually crashing services.
  • Points out health of major system components, showing what needs to be replaced or upgraded.

How To Find It

Press and hold Windows, then press R. Type perfmon /report then press OK.

Program will immediately start scanning your system for potential problems.

Windows Memory Diagnostic

Is your computer simply freezing up, constantly, seemingly without cause? The problem could well be your memory (RAM), but if you want to make sure you should check out the Windows Memory Diagnostic.

What It Does

  • Checks your RAM for errors, so you know when to replace a stick.
  • Lets you know which memory modules have problems so you know what to replace.

How To Find It

In Windows 7, you?ll find the Memory Diagnostic under Administrative Tools in the Start Menu.

Windows 8 users can find the application in the Control Panel, under Administrative Tools. Either way you?ll need to restart your computer in order to use the program ? Windows cannot scan memory that?s currently in use.

How to test your PC for failing hardware, by Guy McDowell, outlines use of this tool quite well.

Scan Hard Drive

Is your hard drive slower than it used to be, or louder than before? The storage in your computer is surprisingly mechanical, regularly spinning at speeds between 4,000 and 15,000 RPM. Hard Drives can, and ultimately will, break down ? and you can find out what state your drive is in by scanning it with a tool called Check Disk.

What It Does

  • Checks your drive for bad sectors, possibly recovers files stored on them.
  • Automatically fixes file system errors that could be causing crashes.

drive-scan-options

How To Find It

Right-click your hard drive in Windows Explorer. Click the Tools tab, then click ?Check Now? under Error-checking. From here you can automatically fix file system errors, scan for bad sectors, or both.

If the disk you?re scanning is in-user, you?ll be prompted to restart your computer and scan before startup.

Device Manager

Is one of the devices plugged into your computer not working? It might be lacking the drivers it needs. Happily, there?s a place in Windows to check.

What It Does

device-manager-running

  • Lists every piece of hardware connected to your computer ? built into the computer or plugged in via USB
  • Show which devices currently lack drivers ? yellow question mark icon ? or aren?t functioning properly ? red X icon.
  • Allows you to manually install drivers, if you know where to find them.
  • Attempts to find online drivers for a variety of devices (though this usually doesn?t work)

Where To Find It

Check the Control Panel ? you?ll find Hardware Manager there.?You?ll also find a link by right-clicking My Computer and checking the left panel, at top:

device-manager-shortcut

Believe it or not, the Wikipedia article about Device Manager is quite helpful. You?ll find a list of error codes and more, so check it out if you?re feeling a little lost.

Conclusion

Will this list teach you to solve every Windows problem, ever? No ? there?s not a list on Earth that can do that. Familiarize yourself with these tools, however, and you?ll have a solid start when it comes to diagnosing PC issues. All can be trusted, because all are part of Windows itself ? and tested thoroughly.

Of course, this list isn?t definitive. Can you guys point to any other great tools bundled into Windows? Leave directions for finding them in the comments below, and we?ll continue compiling this list together.

Ellen DeGeneres.

Ellen DeGeneres is returning in 2014 to host the Oscars, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced Friday.

"I am so excited to be hosting the Oscars for the second time," said DeGeneres in a statement. "You know what they say ? the third time's the charm."

She tweeted shortly after the announcement:

DeGeneres, who hosts the syndicated talk show "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," hosted the 79th Academy Awards for the first time in 2007, and was not just a rare solo female doing so, but the first openly gay or lesbian person to have hosted the event.?

During the show, she said, "What a wonderful night, such diversity in the room, in a year when there's been so many negative things said about people's race, religion, and sexual orientation. And I want to put this out there: If there weren't blacks, Jews and gays, there would be no Oscars, or anyone named Oscar, when you think about that."

DeGeneres was nominated for an Emmy Award for that hosting job.

"We are thrilled to have Ellen DeGeneres host the Oscars," the producers said. "There are few stars today who have Ellen's gift for comedy, with her great warmth and humanity. She is beloved everywhere and we expect that the audience at the Dolby Theatre, and in homes around the globe, will be as excited by this news as we are.

The ceremony, will be broadcast live on March 2, 2014 on ABC.?

Federal officials issue strong new warning about anti-malaria drug

Federal drug officials have issued a strong new warning about a controversial anti-malaria medication once routinely given to U.S. troops, some of whom say it damaged them permanently.

The Food and Drug Administration ordered manufacturers of mefloquine hydrochloride to give the medicine a black box label, the agency's strongest warning, reserved for drugs with significant risks of serious side effects. The FDA said that some neurological and psychiatric side effects can last for months or years after a patient stops taking the drug.

The medication was approved by the FDA in 1989 under the brand name Larium and quickly became a leading drug for preventing and treating malaria ? among travelers and the military.

While other drugs must be taken daily, one tablet a week of mefloquine offers protection against the sometimes-deadly mosquito-borne parasite, including against strains that are resistant to other medications.

But the drug has long carried warnings tying it to dizziness, seizures, insomnia, anxiety, depression and strange dreams. One clinical trial found that 29% of travelers who took mefloquine experienced at least one of those side effects. There is also evidence suggesting a link to violent behavior, including suicide.

Amid growing concerns, the drug fell out of favor over the last decade. Roche, its original manufacturer, stopped selling Larium in the U.S. in 2008. The generic versions still on the market accounted for 226,000 of the 5.4 million U.S. prescriptions for anti-malaria drugs last year, according to IMS Health, which tracks drug trends.

The Pentagon, which used the drug widely in Somalia and during the early years of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, offered little explanation when it began scaling back its reliance on mefloquine and eventually recommended that the drug be used only as a third choice. Military officials continued to dismiss the claims of veterans who insisted that the side effects could be long-lasting.

The new FDA warning provided those veterans a sense of validation.

"I almost fell out of my chair when [the news] was forwarded to me," said Greg Alderete, a retired Army lieutenant colonel who blames his chronic balance and memory problems on the drug, which he took while serving in Somalia in 1993.

Alderete said that in 2008 he started to suspect mefloquine after connecting with other veterans of Somalia who were experiencing similar symptoms.

He eventually helped launch a Facebook group, Veterans Against Larium, which now has more than 1,100 members. He said most served in Somalia, but the group has also attracted veterans from other wars.

Alderete acknowledged that his depression, anger and anxiety could be the result of post-traumatic stress disorder, with which he was diagnosed. But his chronic dizziness and nausea and an inability to remember words are less easily explained.

"There was a big gray zone," he said. "I'm not sure where mefloquine begins and PTSD ends."

Doctors from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs have insisted that his problems are not related to the drug, he said.

The FDA strengthened its warning this week based on a new review of medical literature and reports of patients suffering from dizziness, loss of balance, tinnitus and vertigo, according to a statement from the agency.

The symptoms often started after the first dose or two but continued for months or years. In some cases, the damage was deemed permanent. Usually, the neurological symptoms were accompanied by psychiatric ones, including anxiety, confusion, paranoia and depression, which were also long-lasting.

Dr. Remington Nevin, an epidemiologist who served in the Army and has been a leading critic of the drug, estimated that hundreds of thousands of U.S. troops have taken it.

"Now the military needs to take responsibility to clean up the toxic mess it's created," he said.

The controversy surrounding mefloquine has led to speculation by veterans and others that it may have played a role in the March 11, 2012, killing of 16 Afghan civilians by Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales.

His lawyer, John Henry Browne, said the new FDA warning of long-term side effects could play a role in sentencing proceedings, which are scheduled to begin Aug. 19.

Bales had taken mefloquine while serving in Iraq, but it remains unclear whether he was taking the drug in Afghanistan, Browne said.

He said he is requesting the reports that served as the basis of the FDA warning.

Mano a mano over Dell: Icahn vows to fight on

Dell CEO and founder Michael Dell at a meeting of the Confederation of Indian Industries in Bangalore, January 9, 2012. Voting on a proposal to take computer-maker Dell private was delayed on Friday after Dell agreed to raise the offering price and change the vote-counting system.

The battle for Dell is far from over. Billionaire activist Carl Icahn vowed on Friday to keep fighting for control of the computer maker.

The latest skirmish came after the company said Dell's special committee had reached agreement with the buyout group led by CEO Michael Dell to purchase the company for $13.75 per share. The deal values the company at about $25 billion.

The Round Rock, Texas, company said a group led by its founder and the investment firm Silver Lake Partners will tack a one-time shareholder payout of 13 cents per share to an offer they made last week to buy the company for $13.75 per share. Michael Dell is funding the 13 cents a share special dividend personally.

The company, which has been locked in a public brawl with Icahn, has indicated it is changing its voting standard for a new, higher offer. Toward that end, Dell dramatically reduced the amount it would cost to break up the deal, to $180 million from $450 million. That may open the door for an eventual agreement with the activist Icahn, who has agitated for months to buy the struggling computer giant.

Icahn responded to the new deal via Twitter stating, "We are pleased to have won another battle in the Dell war but the war itself is far from over. More to follow."

On Thursday, Icahn filed a lawsuit to prevent Dell from setting a new record date, the latest in a series of efforts to derail the deal. According to the company, the terms of Dell's buyout agreement include moving the record date to mid-August.

(Read more: Icahn files lawsuit over latest Dell buyout offer)

Icahn isn't the only investor against the deal.

Shareholder Stephen Yacktman, in a statement, said, "The company, increases in value every month. There is no increase in valuation being paid. Shareholders are just getting paid with their own money."

He added: "If the special committee was truly concerned about the shareholders, they would let the shareholders vote on Icahn's proposal and board. What kind of board makes shareholders sue to get to be able to exercise their legal right to vote? By law, the shareholder meeting needs to beheld by mid-August."

In afternoon trading on the Nasdaq, Dell's shares rose more than 5 percent to $13.66. (For the latest stock price, click here.)

Shareholders were scheduled to vote this morning on a lower offer to buy the company for $13.65 per share. That vote has been postponed. Shareholders who own the stock as of Aug. 13 will be eligible to vote at a Sept. 12 special meeting on the new deal. The company will hold its annual meeting on Oct. 17.

Dell's founder and private equity firm Silver Lake want to take the company private, arguing that a painful restructuring can best be best performed away from stock market scrutiny.

But the battle over that deal has raged for months, adding further uncertainty about a company already shrinking along with a rapidly declining PC market.
