New York, U.S.A. ? Toyota and the National Audubon Society awarded over $1 million in TogetherGreen Innovation Grants funding to 41 innovative environmental projects nationwide.

This year?s winning projects involve more than 150 conservation, environmental justice and community organizations working collaboratively on habitat, water and energy conservation. Many of the projects focus on engaging audiences that have traditionally been underrepresented in the conservation movement, from landowners to religious communities to inner-city students.

?Groups that won Innovation Grants this year have ingenuity and creativity on full display. And that?s what it takes to tackle the environmental challenges we face today,? said Audubon President and CEO David Yarnold. ?I?m proud to partner with these innovators in creative approaches to achieve healthier communities and big conservation results.?

Sample projects that will receive 2012 funding include:

Habitat: In Connecticut, Audubon Connecticut and the Connecticut Student Conservation Association will create Audubon WildLife Guards, a Coastal Stewardship and Youth Conservation Training Program in Bridgeport, Conn. The program will provide green job training, mentoring and employment opportunities for high school students who will work to protect threatened beach nesting birds on Pleasure Beach, the largest intact barrier beach in the state.

Water: In Kansas, Friends of the Kaw, Inc., along with the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, Topeka Audubon Society and Jayhawk Audubon Society will launch the ?Save Soldier Creek? campaign to minimize stormwater runoff? in the rural Soldier Creek watershed ? reducing pollution and improving water quality and bird habitat).

Energy: In Arizona, Nina Mason Pulliam Rio Salado Audubon Center and Arizona Interfaith Power & Light will broaden its Footprints of Faith campaign to African American and Latino churches in Phoenix and Tucson promoting steps congregations can take to reduce their carbon footprints.

Engaging diverse audiences in conservation: In North Carolina, Wild South and its partners North Carolina Audubon Society, High Country Audubon Society, National Forests of NC and the Western North Carolina Alliance will reach out to military servicemen and women and nearby Asheville residents to involve them in controlling non-native invasive plants, monitoring bird populations, and educating the public on environmental issues. The goal of the project is to preserve the wilderness character and rare species habitat of the Linville Gorge Wilderness, one of the most rugged and scenic areas in the East.

?Toyota and Audubon really share in the belief that environmental change starts at the grassroots level,? said Patricia Salas Pineda, group vice president of national philanthropy and the Toyota USA Foundation. ?We?re so proud to support this year?s Innovation Grants, which embody TogetherGreen?s commitment to conservation, innovation and diversity.?

Gene network restores cystic fibrosis protein function

ScienceDaily (July 31, 2012) ? Researchers at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine have discovered a genetic process that can restore function to a defective protein, which is the most common cause of cystic fibrosis (CF).

Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disease caused by mutations in a gene that adversely affect its protein product. In its correct form and cellular location, this protein, cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), functions as a channel for ions to move across cell membranes, and is critical for maintaining cellular salt and water balance.

The most common CF-causing genetic mutation, known as delta F508, disrupts the process whereby the CFTR protein is folded into its correct shape and shipped to the membranes of cells that line the airways and other organs. Most of the defective CFTR protein is misprocessed and gets degraded. The lack of normal CFTR ion channels leads to numerous problems, including lung infection and inflammation, the major causes of disease and death in cystic fibrosis.

Despite its importance, how the CFTR protein is made and delivered to cell membranes in its functioning form is not well understood. The UI team led by Paul McCray, M.D., professor of pediatrics and microbiology with UI Health Care and the Roy J. Carver Chair in Pulmonary Research and Vice Chair for Research in Pediatrics, investigated the role of microRNAs -- small non-coding stretches of RNA -- in regulating expression of CFTR.

In their research, McCray and colleagues discovered that one particular microRNA, called miR-138, helps control the biosynthesis of CFTR by regulating a network of genes involved in the production and processing of the protein. The study, published online the week of July 30 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) Early Edition, shows that that miR-138 acts on the other genes to orchestrate a cellular program that increases production of CFTR and increases the amount of the protein that is transported to the cell membrane where it functions as an ion channel.

"We first wanted to determine how this gene network impacts the CFTR protein produced in people who don't have cystic fibrosis," says lead author Shyam Ramachandran, Ph.D.. "We identified a novel regulatory circuit, but then asked ourselves if any of this affected the mutant protein."

Surprisingly, the researchers found that when the gene network was activated by miR-138, it not only increased the amount of the mutated protein, but also partially restored the protein's function.

By manipulating the microRNA network, the UI team was able to change the fate of the misfolded CFTR from being degraded in the cell to functioning as an ion channel in the cell membrane.

"This was a very surprising finding," Ramachandran says. "It unexpectedly helps rescue the function of the mutant protein."

Because most people with CF have one or two copies of the delta F508 mutation, interventions that overcome the CFTR protein-processing problems caused by this mutation might have important implications for new ways of treating CF.

"In the field of CF therapeutics there's great interest in identifying ways to restore the function of this misprocessed protein," McCray says. "We were very surprised that manipulating this microRNA regulated gene network had this rescuing effect. This opens up a new avenue for the development of CF therapies."

'He served his country': WWII vet beat up, robbed

A group of young men allegedly beat and robbed an 87-year-old World War II veteran near his home in Chicago, Ill. WMAQ's Natalie Martinez reports.

By NBCChicago.com

In Chicago, two teens and a man are in police custody after they allegedly jumped an 87-year-old World War II veteran and robbed him of his wallet, knocking out the man's hearing aid and busting his dentures in the process.

Two delivery men who witnessed the attack secretly followed the alleged attackers and guided police to them.

For more visit NBCChicago.com.

The trio, ages 15, 17 and 20, were arrested not far from where Porter Cross was kicked and robbed at West 71st Street and South Artesian Avenue.

"I'm outraged. I'm saddened. My heart hurts," Cross' daughter, Cynthia Steward-Jones, said Tuesday. "He served his country and worked for the post office for 36 years. Who could do something like this to an old person? Or anybody?"

Charged in the attack were Rashon Williams, 20, of Calumet City, Ill., and Michael Protho, 17, of Hazel Crest, Ill. Both were charged with robbery of a senior citizen. Protho was also charged with reckless conduct for trying to run into traffic in order to escape arrest, authorities said.

The 15-year-old, also charged with felony robbery, will be handled by juvenile authorities. Bond was set at $500,000 each for Williams and Protho.

"I got nothing to say to them," said Cross. "I feel sorry for them, but I want to know why would they do something like this to an old man."

Cross was treated at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn for several bruises and lacerations across his face.

Marta Omarr, who lives on the property where the beating took place, called the attack disgusting.

"I just thought it was awful for him to be 87 years old, birthday coming up Thursday, and for him to just be on a nice day, in broad daylight, to be walking to the store and to be attacked by these three animals," she added. "It's ridiculous."

Paper Investments are Worth the Paper They're Written On ...

I get somewhat flustered when I hear someone say something similar to what I heard last week- ? I just put $3,000,000 into the stock market!? I truly get a burden for them. It has nothing to do with wishing they would have invested with us; we don?t sell an investment product anyway. We give opportunities to get invested in tangible assets, ALONGSIDE us. We are in this thing together with our clients. We invest in the EXACT same place they do, so we don?t ?sell? anything.

My concern grows when I see others blissfully ignorant to what?s really going on. It takes a strong desire to be informed to heed sound research.

What I mean by research is simple information like this:

The Number of Banks that have Failed in the last 10 Years:

2000- 2
2001-4
2002-11 (because of 9/11)
2003- 3
2004- 4
2005-2006- 0
2007- 3
2008- 25 (introduction of QE1)
2009- 140
2010- 157 (introduction of QE2)

So, from 2000 to 2007 27 banks failed. And from 2009-2010 297 failed. This is the effects of the government printing 2 trillion dollars, which they call ?Quantitative Easing.? (QE1, QE2)

Entire states (which is the government) cannot pay their bills. How far behind are nations?

Why, you ask, are paper investments worth the paper they are written on?

And let me make sure I?m clear- paper investments include stocks, bonds, mutual funds, IRA?s, 401K?s, basically anything that is held in U.S. dollars.

It really comes down to a flawed system to begin with. Fiat currency as they call it, is a faith-based currency.

Listen to the Wikipedia definition of Fiat Money:

Fiat money is money that derives its value from government regulation or law: the initial value of fiat money is established by government decree.

Now, when the currency is backed by something tangible, (such as the gold standard which was finally done away with in 1933) a paper currency can be sustainable.

But, something people don?t understand is that one of the main reasons a currency must be backed by something tangible in order to retain its value is not because the item itself holds the value, although that is part of it, but really it?s an accountability system. There is only so much gold in the world. It is a limited resource. Plentiful to a point yes, but limited. We cannot keep producing gold at lightning speed like the Federal Reserve does paper money?to the tune of 2 TRILLION in two years (during QE1 and QE2).

America has been living above its means for a long time. We live a fantasy. And fantasies have the habit of vanishing into thin air -as fast as the money they printed out of thin air. In reality, the dollar is only better than Monopoly money, in the proportion that people believe it is. And what do you think the world is going to do when they realize this? Well, they already have. And that is why they are going around the U.S. dollar being the reserve currency for the first time ever, by trading amongst one another to avoid the dollar. They aren?t dumb, and neither are we. Our government knows our money is worthless?they just won?t tell you that. They will let it play out and they can?t stop it. One day soon the paper budget America has endowed itself with will be shown for what it really is- fiscal irresponsibility.

Just remember this when the dollar falls? government intervention is NOT the solution. They are the PROBLEM.
