ZP Heller: A Generation Free of AIDS?

We may be witnessing the beginning of the end for AIDS. A recent report from UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, reveals a more than 50 percent decline in new HIV infections in 25 low- and middle-income countries over the last decade. Thirteen of those countries are located in sub-Saharan Africa, where this global epidemic continues to plague the population.

This remarkable news comes just in time for World AIDS Day, December 1, and as we reach the 1,000-day deadline for achieving the Millennium Development Goal regarding HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention. UNAIDS claims that ending the AIDS epidemic is "entirely feasible," due primarily to enhancing people's access to drugs that treat the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes AIDS.

"The pace of progress is quickening," said UNAIDS Executive Director Michel Sidib? in a press release. "What used to take a decade is now being achieved in 24 months."

HIV Prevention Rises, While AIDS-Related Deaths Decline

According to the UNAIDS report, there were 700,000 fewer new HIV infections globally in the last decade. HIV-prevention efforts have been most successful among children. In fact, the sharpest reduction in new HIV infections around the world -- approximately two-thirds between 2009 and 2011 -- has been among newborns. New infections among children in general declined by 43 percent from 2003-2011.

"It is becoming evident that achieving zero HIV infections in children is possible," said Sidib?. "I am excited that far fewer babies are being born with HIV. We are moving from despair to hope."

In addition, UNAIDS contends that in sub-Saharan Africa, AIDS-related deaths have plummeted by more than one-third in the last six years. Meanwhile, the number of people who receive antiretroviral treatment has jumped 59 percent in the last two years, and there has been a 63 percent increase worldwide in access to HIV treatment during that period.

The report also maintains that approximately 8 million people were receiving antiretroviral treatment by the end of 2011 -- a number that is up 20 percent since 2003. However, the UN's targeted goal is to treat 15 million people by 2015.

Achieving an AIDS-Free Generation

Sidib? cautioned that although we are making historic progress in combating this global epidemic, much more must be done to achieve an AIDS-free generation by 2015.

There were an estimated 34 million people living with HIV at the end of 2011; approximately half of them were unaware of their HIV status. Despite a 20 percent decline in new infections over the last decade, there were still 2.5 million new infections last year, along with 1.7 million deaths due to AIDS-related causes. Over 70 percent of those new cases came from sub-Saharan Africa, where approximately one in every 20 adults is infected.

In particular, HIV/AIDS continues to have a disproportionate impact on women and children. HIV/AIDS is said to be the chief cause of death for women of reproductive age worldwide. Yet UNAIDS estimates that 60 percent of low- and middle-income countries do not allocate sufficient resources for women and girls in their national HIV responses.

Instead, there is rampant gender inequality, often accompanied by violence or the threat of violence, which prevents women from accessing HIV prevention, treatment, and care services. Perhaps that is one of the reasons why the UN Population Fund recently described access to contraception and family planning as a "universal human right."

Beyond the numbers, people living with HIV are often stigmatized, becoming victims of discrimination and gross injustice. To that end, UNAIDS recently appointed Nobel peace prize winner and Member of Parliament Daw Aung San Suu Kyi as a Global Advocate for Zero Discrimination.

"It is a great honor to be chosen as a champion for people who live on the fringes of society and struggle every day to maintain their dignity and basic human rights. I would like to be the voice of the voiceless," said Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. She will work to remove the stigma that often intimidates people and precludes them from seeking HIV treatment.

ryannrobbinsss: Recreational Sport ? Steps to Follow When ...

How do you know which recreational sport is right for you? Though this is a simple question, it may not have a simple answer. Before answering this question, it makes sense to know the definition of a recreational sport. In simple terms, a recreational sport is any sport activity or event that one engages in during leisure time. In other words, it is a sport activity or event performed primarily for entertainment and fun. Though in some cases there may be monetary rewards associated with passtime sport, it is not usually the main goal. Other reasons associated with participating in a leisure activities includes: fitness, health, socialization, competition and sport support among others.

There are several options of leisure activities available for all age categories ranging from indoor to outdoor. Making the decision on which choice to pursue can be a real challenge and this varies significantly from one person to the other. For former professional athletes, the decision may be easier especially if they continue participating in their particular former professional sports (i.e. recreational level). The big task of choosing the right recreational sport is however on beginners. In order to make the right choice(s) if you are a beginner, it is important to consider the following general guidelines:

1. Choose a sport that you understand and are passionate about: Leisure sport in a way becomes part of your lifestyle and therefore needs to be entertaining and enjoyable. Choosing something that you don?t like or have no knowledge about can be frustrating even if your friends adore it. It only makes sense to pursue something that you know its rules and regulations. However, this does not mean one cannot learn a new sport or game, but it easier to do so if you love the sport.

2. Consider your goals and objectives: As mentioned above, there are different reasons that drive people into recreational sports. Choosing a sport that is in line with your goals, for example losing weight will only enrich the whole recreational experience. Some one looking for a recreational sport to aid in cutting down some extra body weight may benefit from running, jogging, walking, hiking or swimming among other high calorie burning sport activities as opposed to playing cards or video games. On the other hand somebody looking for a recreational sport that favors socialization may benefit from the latter.

3. Facilities, tools and equipment required: Different recreational sports may require different tools, facilities or equipment or in some cases may require none at all. These tools, facilities or equipment may also vary depending on the needs of every person. For example if you want to play golf for recreation, you will definitely have to purchase a golf club, balls and perhaps shoes. You will also need an available and accessible golf course to play. In some cases if you have more than one favorite recreational sport, you may have to choose what is more convenient based on availability of facilities. It makes more sense to go running at a nearby track especially if you get off work late in the evenings than having to drive for several miles to get to a golf course (i.e. if you like both golf and running).

4. Availability of time: Since a recreational sport is a pastime sport, choosing the right one may be dictated by how much free time is at one?s disposal. Some leisure sports are more time consuming than others. Additionally some of these sports must only be played outside. Where as some sports such as running, jogging, walking, playing tennis, playing basketball or swimming offers both indoor and outdoor options, some of them, for example playing golf, hiking, kayaking, surfing among other don?t. The more time one has, the more the options to choose from and the vice versa.

5. Seasonality: Though this may not be a big deal to people living along the equatorial line geographically, it definitely affects people living in areas with winter and summer climatic seasons. Some recreational sports such as those requiring snow may only be available during winter and only in some parts of the world. So if skiing is the only favorite recreational sport that one can participate in, it means there will be nothing to do for most of the year i.e. during the other seasons. When deciding on the right sport for recreation, it is advisable to have more than one option especially in a situation where one is affected by seasonal changes.

6. Number of participants required: Where as most sports require participation of more than one person at one time, some can be pursued individually. If your schedule does not allow group or team participation, choosing a recreational sport that will enable you to participate alone is a good idea. Jogging, walking, swimming, biking and running are great examples.

As mentioned earlier, this is not an exhaustive list of guidelines, but it is only meant to give you an idea of how to pick the best sport that will make your recreational life a success. Remember the bottom line is fun and entertainment.

Seagate Backup Plus Desktop Drive for Mac (3TB)

The Seagate Backup Plus Desktop Drive for Mac (3TB) ($179.99 list) is a desktop drive that has enough space to back up all currently shipping MacBook laptops and Mac desktops. It can also be used as a repository for your digital life, including photos, videos, and music. While it's not the fastest drive out there, it has enough speed to make sure you're not waiting on it to copy groups of files back and forth from the primary drive in your Mac. It's a good choice for the digital pack rat who needs a place to put all his digital photos and video downloads.

Design and Features
The Backup Plus Desktop Drive for Mac (3TB) looks very similar to the former Editors' Choice Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk (4TB) ($250 list, 4 stars) that we reviewed earlier, with the same black plastic construction. This time, however, the Mac version has a matte silver stripe instead of a black one. The GoFlex and Backup Plus desktop lines share the same USM (Universal Storage Module) connectors between the base and the drive chassis. The USM connector allows you to physically lock the drive away at night while keeping the power and USB connectors connected to your Mac. Alternately, you can purchase a desktop Thunderbolt adapter ($189) so you can use the drive with the faster and more flexible Thunderbolt interface on current Macs. Aside from the USB and power ports on the back, there is a row of LEDs on the front of the base that let you know how full the drive is (provided you have the Seagate Dashboard software installed).

The drive we reviewed has a 3TB capacity, and there is a 2TB version currently available ($129.99). Theoretically, the base should be able to support a 4TB model as well, though that model isn't yet available. We suppose you could put the GoFlex Desk's 4TB drive on the Backup Plus' base and use it that way. The drive measures 7 by 1.75 by 4.75 inches (HWD) with the base installed. Since the drive requires an AC adapter to power up, this is strictly a deskbound drive. It's portable in that it's easy to pick up, but you won't be able to use it away from a power outlet, as you would a true bus-powered portable drive. The 3TB is plenty to back up or store the files from most desktops and laptops, good enough to hold over 100 high-definition movies and hundreds of standard-definition ones. The drive comes pre-formatted with Mac OS X's HFS+ format, so it will work with Time Machine out of the box.

The Backup Plus Desktop also comes with Seagate's Dashboard software, which activates the capacity gauge on the front of the drive's base. Four LEDs show how full the drive is while it's on. Seagate Dashboard also can be used to upload photos and videos to social media services like Facebook and Flickr, plus Dashboard can also be set to automatically or manually download pictures from your profile(s) on Facebook and Flickr for local safekeeping. Essentially it helps you manage your digital life online and locally on your Mac. Our current Editors' Choice desktop drive, the ioSafe Solo G3 (1TB) ($299 direct, 4.5 stars), relies on brute force and a bulletproof chassis to keep your data safe. The Seagate leverages online storage, helping you share and keep your photos safe online via social networking. The Backup Plus Desktop comes with a two-year warranty, better than the one-year warranty found on more generic hard drives.

Performance
This is a fairly speedy drive. It takes a scant eight seconds to copy our standard 1.2GB test folder via USB 3.0. This is much faster than the Iomega Mac Companion (3TB) ($369.99 list, 3.5 stars) (42 sec USB 2.0, 30 sec FireWire800), which also uses a single 3TB drive mechanism. That said, performance drives like the LaCie Little Big Disk 1TB SSD (Thunderbolt) ($999 list, 4.5 stars) are faster at six seconds. Likewise on the AJA System test (a test of data throughput optimized for video), the Seagate Backup Plus puts in a strong 167 MBps write throughput and a 171 MBps read throughput, way outclassing the Iomega Mac Companion by a factor of four or five. Of course, the SSD-powered LaCie Little Big Disk leaves them all in the dust. Essentially, the Seagate Backup Plus is a good Time Machine drive for quick file backups, but there are better-specialized drives for video editors and scientific users.

The Seagate Backup Plus Desktop is a very good Mac drive for the user that needs to clear a lot of space off their primary hard drives, or needs a Time Machine drive to back up the 1-3TB hard drive in their desktop Mac. You can of course use it with a MacBook laptop, but you'll have to leave the drive in your office or at home, since it's not portable. The current Editors' Choice ioSafe Solo G3 holds on to its desktop-class drive crown thanks to its data protections, both physical and pre-paid data recovery after an incident. The Solo G3 can also be bolted down to a metal or wood surface, which adds to its security. But if you simply need a repository for the files from your Mac, the Seagate Backup Plus Desktop Drive is a very good choice.

COMPARISON TABLE

Manning: Thoughts of suicide, made noose

FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) ? The Army private charged with handing over reams of classified material to WikiLeaks acknowledged Friday that he tied a bedsheet into a noose and contemplated suicide shortly after his arrest.

The pretrial testimony appeared to support the military's argument that it was trying to protect Pfc. Bradley Manning from harming himself by keeping him in strict isolation, taking away his clothes and shackling him when he was outside his cell.

Manning's lawyers argue that the conditions he experienced for nine months at the Marine Corps brig in Quantico, Va., amounted to illegal punishment, lasting well past the time he was having suicidal thoughts, and that the charges against him should be dropped as a result.

Under cross-examination by prosecutor Maj. Ashden Fein, Manning testified that he fashioned the noose while being held in Kuwait soon after he was accused of engineering the biggest leak of classified material in U.S. history.

Manning, 24, said his time in Kuwait was the lowest he felt during his entire confinement.

"I certainly made a noose," the former intelligence analyst said. "The sheet noose in particular."

When he was transferred to the brig at Quantico in July 2010, he said, he wrote on his intake form that he was "always planning and never acting" upon suicidal thoughts. He was classified a suicide risk for eight days, then was upgraded to the less-restrictive "prevention of injury" status.

Manning maintains that neither designation was appropriate because he didn't feel like hurting himself after leaving Kuwait.

Quantico commanders maintained the extra restrictions despite repeated recommendations by brig psychiatrists that they be eased. Among other things, he was given scratchy, suicide-prevention bedding. Sometimes all his possessions, including his underwear and eyeglasses, were removed from his cell.

Manning testified Friday that he stood at naked attention for morning count one day in 2011 after a guard appeared to object to his use of a blanket to cover himself. He said he had been put on "suicide risk" the previous day after making a motion as if to hit himself in the head during a heated discussion with the brig commander about his confinement.

The testimony marked the first time military prosecutors went face-to-face with Manning in court.

The 5-foot-3 soldier looked youthful in his dark-blue dress uniform, close-cropped hair and rimless eyeglasses. He was animated, often speaking in emphatic bursts, swiveling in the witness chair and gesturing with his hands.

On Friday morning, as on previous days, there were more than a dozen Manning supporters in the courtroom.

The mood was lighter than on Thursday, the first time he spoke in public since his arrest in May 2010. Manning appeared relaxed on the stand and frequently smiled. He provoked laughter when he described his grading system for Quantico guards on weekly questionnaires: "decent" when he was unhappy with his treatment, "excellent" or "fine" otherwise.

Manning was an intelligence analyst in Baghdad in 2009 and 2010.

He is accused of sending the secret-spilling website WikiLeaks more than 250,000 diplomatic cables, classified memos, Iraq and Afghanistan war logs, Guantanamo Bay prison records and a 2007 video clip of a U.S. helicopter crew gunning down 11 men later found to have included a news photographer. The Pentagon said its troops mistook the camera equipment for weapons.

Manning is charged with offenses including violating espionage and computer security laws as well as aiding the enemy, which alone is punishable by up to life in prison.

He has offered to plead guilty to eight of the 22 charges against him, but the military judge presiding over the case has yet to decide whether to accept the plea. The government could still prosecute Manning on all counts.
