Transformative technologies are highlighted in current issue of Technology and Innovation

TAMPA, Fla. (April 23, 2013) Improving brain function is one of the topics explored in the latest issue of Technology and Innovation Proceedings of the National Academy of Inventors (https://www.cognizantcommunication.com/component/content/article/636). The special issue, which also contains studies on medical technology and health care delivery, contains two articles on brain health: one on preventing and curing mental illness and one on improving the brain through training.

The BRAINnet Foundation uses technology to prevent and cure mental illnesses

The non-profit BRAINnet Foundation is using standardized protocols and assessment platforms to pool data across mental disorders, sites and studies, says Stephen H. Koslow of the San Francisco-based BRAINnet Foundation.

"The BRAINnet Foundation goal is to understand mental illness as a brain disease and to ultimately discover how to prevent and cure these illnesses," says Koslow. "This is accomplished through open electronic sharing and continued expansion of a global database of human brain data in health and disease across the lifespan."

According to Koslow, data are available for 5,092 healthy subjects and from those with specific disorders. Studies using their data have shown how the standardized approach is a quality and efficient way to take the lead in initiatives being forged in psychiatry and neuroscience, an example being the National Institutes of Mental Health's Research Domain Criteria, with which BRAINnet's data domains align.

"BRAINnet provides scientists with access to thousands of data sets obtained and quantified using standardized protocols that span multiple modes of measurement," explains Koslow. "These data sets also include healthy subjects as well as a continually growing spectrum of multiple specialized patient cohorts. The BRAINnet standardized data sharing approach and infrastructure offers researchers new ways to conduct and raise funds for research."

Brain training improves thinking and wellbeing

The brain benefits from training, according to Dr. Evian Gordon of Brain Resource, an organization that over a two and a half year period used a "naturalistic study design" to analyze data from an online brain training program called MyBrainSolutions. The training included online games.

"Games within the domains of thinking, emotion, feeling and self-regulation were found to have beneficial effects in improving measured scores," explains Gordon. "The most significant benefits were found for games training positivity to improve scores within anxiety, stress and depression (feeling scores)."

Training in self-regulation was found to be beneficial in terms of improved memory, attention, and executive function as well as a reduction in anxiety, stress, and depression levels.

"Results suggest a synergistic effect of cognitive and emotional training," concludes Gordon.

The how and why of medical technology

According to Nasser Arshadi and Joseph J. Parks of the University of Missouri, who wrote an editorial on this special issue highlighting medical technologies, the studies and papers present "empirical evidence on the efficacy of select technologies" and "contribute to the public policy discourse on the use of health care technologies."

Iran to meet U.N. nuclear watchdog in May: Iranian media

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran and officials from the United Nations nuclear watchdog will hold a new round of talks over Iran's disputed nuclear program on May 21 in Vienna, Iranian media reported on Monday.

The Mehr and ISNA news agencies gave no further details in their reports. The International Atomic Energy Agency press had no immediate comment. Last week, a diplomatic source told Reuters that a meeting in May was a possibility, but that no date had yet been fixed.

It would be the 10th round of negotiations between the two sides since early 2012, so far without a deal that would enable the U.N. watchdog to resume its long-stalled investigation of Iran's nuclear facilities.

The IAEA wants inspectors to restart a long-stalled investigation into suspected atomic bomb research by the Islamic Republic.

The IAEA-Iran talks are separate from, but still closely linked to, broader diplomatic negotiations between Tehran and six world powers aimed at resolving the decade-old dispute peacefully and preventing a new Middle East war.

Iran denies Western allegations that it is seeking to develop the capability to build nuclear weapons, saying its atomic activities are aimed at generating electricity. But its refusal to curb sensitive nuclear work that can have both civilian and military purposes, and its lack of openness with IAEA inspectors, have drawn United Nations and Western sanctions.

The last round of IAEA-Iran negotiations, in February, yielded no breakthrough.

Air traffic furloughs cause delays but no major havoc

By Karen Jacobs

(Reuters) - Air travelers experienced delays at some U.S. airports on Monday as staff cuts at control towers took effect, but the widespread havoc and hour-long waits that regulators had predicted last week largely failed to materialize.

Instead, the U.S. air system operated as it would if only a few bouts of bad weather had affected schedules.

Still, airlines predicted sizable disruption and hundreds of millions of dollars in lost revenue if delays happen as predicted and persist for a year. And travel groups said safety concerns and inconvenience could curb business travel.

The Federal Aviation Administration said on Monday that it was grappling with "staffing challenges" at air-traffic control facilities in New York, Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Angeles and Jacksonville, Florida. Controllers were spacing aircraft farther apart for takeoffs and landings, causing delays, the FAA said.

But late in the day, only 150 flights had been canceled, a relatively small number, according to website Flightaware.com. And although some travelers waited nearly two hours for flights, delays were much shorter on average.

For example, as of late afternoon New York time, flights to Charlotte Douglas International Airport were delayed an average of 22 minutes, the FAA's website showed. A flight delay of 15 minutes or less is considered on time, so a 22-minute delay is minimal by industry standards.

Flights to Florida were delayed earlier on Monday because of staffing cuts and weather, said Mark Duell, vice president of operations at FlightAware.com, a flight tracking website.

"Staffing-related delays come and go," Duell said. So far, "it's only a problem if there some other condition that's going on."

Delays at New York's major airports and in Denver were due staffing and other factors, Duell said. By contrast, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International, the nation's busiest airport, and Chicago's O'Hare, reported no significant delays, the FAA said.

INDUSTRY VOICES CONCERN

The FAA furloughs, which started Sunday, are intended to cut staffing by 10 percent to save $200 million of $637 million the agency needs to pare from its budget. Of 47,000 employees facing furloughs, which are expected to last through September, nearly 13,000 are air traffic controllers.

New York's LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports and Los Angeles International Airport grappled with delays of up to an hour and a half on Sunday, when the furloughs began, Duell said. The FAA said there were 400 flight delays on Sunday related to the furloughs.

Despite the improvement Monday, airlines and business advocacy groups continued to voice concern that staffing cuts would reduce corporate travel and hurt the economy.

Southwest Airlines said its estimated conservatively that furloughs would cost it $200 million a year if implemented to the full extent the FAA has outlined.

The comment was contained in a motion filed Friday by Airlines for America (A4A), a trade group of airlines. The group said it was still pressing in court for a 30-day delay of the staff cuts, after the court denied its request last week for an emergency stay of the furloughs.

American Airlines, also in an affidavit with the A4A motion, estimated furloughs would result in 582 daily flight delays and losses of $1.77 million a day.

Delta Air Lines said it might have to cancel 152 flights a day, most on regional planes operated by connection carriers, losing an estimated $575,000 a day in revenue.

Furloughs "will produce missed connections and widespread flight cancellations," the Global Business Travel Administration, a trade group, said in an open letter to FAA Administrator Michael Huerta that was distributed on Friday.

"If these disruptions unfold as predicted, business travelers will stay home."

Jean Covelli, president of The Travel Team agency in Buffalo, New York, said many business customers are rethinking plans for trips now that the furloughs have started.

"There is grave concern about safety," she said. "Businesses are canceling meetings. There's a whole domino effect that this is causing. I don't think it's going to get any better."

But on Monday, some major airlines said there were no flight cancellations due to the furloughs. Southwest Airlines said it expects "possible flight delays" from the staffing cuts but added it had no major problems with operations on Monday. American Airlines reported no issues other than normal ground delays.

United Airlines said the nation's air space "functioned pretty well" during the day on Sunday. But "we saw alarming pockets of degradation due to FAA staffing in Los Angeles and LaGuardia both last night and this morning," spokeswoman Megan McCarthy said in a statement on Monday.

"We are concerned about how this is going to evolve and affect air travel reliability for our customers."

Sandshrew (Japanese: Sand) is a Ground-type Pokmon.

It evolves into Sandslash starting at level 22.

Sandshrew is a tailed, bipedal, ground-dwelling pholidote notable for its defensive capabilities. Its body is mostly covered in a dry, tough hide, which is colored to blend in with the sands of the desert. It has two sharp claws on each foot and has three small but sharp claws on its paws, which are also useful for burrowing and can sometimes be poisonous. It can curl into a tight ball about the same size as a basketball to protect its soft underbelly.

Sandshrew's special abilities are extremely limited compared to other Pokmon. It has a greater control over the ground and sand than the average Pokmon, mostly derived from adaptation to its habitat.

In the wild, Sandshrew are mostly defensive by nature. They spend much of their time hidden underground in their burrows and will kick up sand or instantly roll into a ball to escape predators. They may venture out to hunt, taking advantage of the desert sands to hide themselves.

However, with the help of a Trainer, a Sandshrew can become bolder and much more daring, and can even be trained to swim despite the fact that the water weakens them. They are still fond of curling up, though, even if not for defense. Although Sandshrew are usually bipedal, they are able to run on all fours.

Disliking water, Sandshrew are adapted to dry, arid areas. Thus, they can be commonly found in deserts and grasslands, and sometimes in river valleys or the upper levels of caves as well. For the cave varieties, they also dry up if exposed to concentrated doses of light, particularly lights strung together in the cave. Wherever they are, they live underground in deep burrows. It can be found in Kanto, Johto and Hoenn, but it is hardy enough to survive in Orre and can occasionally be found in Sinnoh as well.

Sandshrew do not require a lot of water, due to a very efficient system of staying hydrated with minimal moisture. They hunt for prey in the wild.

Sandshrew was first featured in The Path to the Pokmon League. It was owned by a Pokmon Trainer named A.J.. Despite A.J.'s seemly barbaric training methods (e.g. using a whip, training in a pool), it was very loyal to him.

Sandshrew is a combination of sand and shrew (a small rodent-like mammal).

Wailmer (Japanese: Hoeruko) is a Water-type Pokmon.

It evolves into Wailord starting at level 40.

They live in the ocean, but occasionally can bounce onto the shoreline.

They eat over a ton of food a day, which they filter with their baleen plates.

A Wailmer was befriended by Robin, a man who was living on an uncharted island, in Island Time. The Ball Whale Pokmon evolved into a Wailord in order to transport Robin, Ash and his friends to a ship heading to Ever Grande City, though Robin later decided that he wanted to go back to the island.

Wailmer is based on a stereotypical baleen whale with aspects of a beach ball, similarly to Azumarill.

Wailmer may be a combination of whale and mer (French for sea). Wail may also refer to the sounds or songs that whales and this Pokmon might make.

Hoeruko literally means (bellowing child), but hoeru (bellow) is phonetically similar to whale, making it also possibly mean whale child.

Ninetales (Japanese: Kyukon) is a Fire-type Pokmon.

It evolves from Vulpix when exposed to a Fire play with fake pokemon Glaucea Stone.

This fox-like, quadruped Pokmon is covered with a thick, luxurious golden-white fur, as well as having nine tails, each of which is tipped with orange. They also have a fluffy crest atop their heads and a similar ruff around their necks. Ninetales have gleaming red eyes that are said to give them the power of mind control. They can also live up to one thousand years.

Ninetales are based on Pokemon Funny the kitsune of Japanese mythology, giving them abilities to Dirt Bike Game wield Ghost-type attacks such as Confuse Ray, and the fairly Ghost exclusive Will-O-Wisp. They are also very vengeful Pokmon and have been known to curse those who mistreat them. Ninetales are highly intelligent Pokmon that understand human speech. Many legends surround this Pokmon, one of which states that Ninetales was born when nine saints were united and reincarnated as this Pokmon. Ninetales have also been shown on several occasions to be able to swim, most notably in Mewtwo Returns and The Power Of One, which is unusual for most Fire types.

This Pokmon's extreme intelligence lends to what most consider Psychic-type characteristics, though Ninetales has never officially been described as anything other than a Fire-type. It also seems to hold grudges very easily and will curse humans and Pokmon alike if they touch one of its tails.

Like its pre-evolution, Ninetales can be found in grassy plains, near active volcanoes, or in shaded mountainous areas, as well as urban areas such as parks and in avenues, more commonly at night. They are also found in areas associated with death, such as Mt. Pyre.

In Beauty and the Breeder, a friend of Suzy named Zane had a Ninetales and used it in a Pokmon breeding contest.

In Just Waiting On A Friend, a very old Ninetales befriended Brock, who bore a resemblance to her long lost master. This Ninetales created all sorts of illusions, including one of a woman through which it spoke.

Ninetales was first seen in Electric Soldier Porygon.

Ninetales made its dub debut in The pokemon Battling Eevee Brothers.

The Cinnabar Island Gym Leader, Blaine, used a Ninetales against Ash in their first Gym battle in Riddle Me This. It reappeared in a flashback in Volcanic Panic.

In Mewtwo Strikes Back, a Ninetales owned by Neesha was one of the Pokmon that were captured and cloned by Mewtwo. The Ninetales clone is seen again in Mewtwo Returns.

A Ninetales made a cameo appearance in Misty Meets Her Match. This Ninetales belonged to Rudy.

Ninetales also appeared in The Power of One.

An injured Ninetales appeared under the care of Katrina in A Bite to Remember.

A Ninetales appeared in All Things Bright and Beautifly! under the ownership of a Pokmon Coordinator.

Multiple Ninetales appeared in the opening of Destiny Deoxys.

Ninetales also had a cameo during the opening credits of Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, taking part in the festival honoring Sir Aaron. Also, one appeared in the opening of the movie.

A Ninetales appeared in a flashback in Mutiny in the Bounty! as one of J's captured Pokmon.

In Pokmon Adventures, a Ninetales was captured by Blue, where he uses it in his Gym.

Marge has Ninetales that evolved from a Vulpix.

In Pokmon Mystery Dungeon: Ginji's Rescue Spongebob Games Team, the Curse of Ninetales is the reason why main character Ginji was transformed into a Torchic.

Koga sent out Ninetales to participate in the No. 1 Pokmon Contest in Aim to be the No. 1 Little Girl Games Pokmon!.

Blaine's Ninetales was seen in the Cinnabar Gym when Satoshi enters it.

Enta's Vulpix evolved into Ninetales in the final chapter.

Ninetales, like Vulpix, is based on a fox. However, in Japan there are certain legends concerning foxes, or kitsune, as they are known there. One such legend which relates to Ninetales the most is how many-tailed foxes can breathe fire, create illusions, and have extremely long lifespans. After living a long time, these creatures take on spirit forms, which may be the reason why these two related Pokmon can learn Ghost-type moves. In particular, Ninetales is based on the , the nine-tailed fox, which is a fox of advanced age whose fur has turned silver-gold. It is said to have the power of infinite vision.

Ninetales is a combination of nine and tales, which is either a corruption of tails or refers to Ninetales's origin as a Japanese myth. It also could possibly be a reference to the cat o' nine tails whip, which was historically used in military punishments.

Kyukon is a combination of ky (nine) and kon (grudge), which refers to the curse that Vulpix and Ninetales may cast on their foes. This is also reflected in Vulpix, which learns Grudge. Alternatively, it can be read as (old grudge). Kon may also refer to the Japanese onomatopoeia kon kon, which is the sound that foxes make. Furthermore, a konro is a gas burner stove. Also, an alternate reading of the Japanese word for fox, kitsune, is ko.

GOP State Lawmaker Apologizes for ?Jew Me Down? Slur

Oklahoma Republican Lawmaker Dennis Johnson Apologizes to The Jews for Jew Me Down Slur

Oklahoma state Rep. Dennis Johnson apologized after the phrase ?Jew me down? during a debate Wednesday.

An Oklahoma Republican lawmaker apologized Wednesday after using the phrase ?Jew me down? during a debate on the floor of the state House.

State Rep. Dennis Johnson (R-Duncan) was touting small businesses and saying they could compete with larger stores and chains because of their customer service, even though customers ?might try to Jew me down on a price. That?s fine ? that?s free market as well.?

Members seated behind Johnson quickly reacted to the comment, which is considered an anti-Jewish slur. Seconds later, someone passed Johnson a note about what he said.

?Did I?? Johnson asked. ?I apologize to the Jews. They?re good small businessmen as well.?

Speaking afterward to The Oklahoman, Johnson said he ?made an offhand reference that was inappropriate and I know that it hurt some folks.?

?I acknowledge that. I regret that. I apologize for it. It was unintentional,? Johnson said.

He said ?negotiate? would have been a better word to use.

?It just came out of one of the wrinkles of my brain and it was not something that was intentional,? Johnson told the newspaper. ?I certainly didn?t mean to offend anyone and I apologize for the folks I did offend. It is a comment that should never be made. I will never do it again.?

Dinklage talks 'Game of Thrones,' his sex appeal

Helen Sloan / HBO

Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister on "Game of Thrones."

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

He stars on one of television's hottest dramas. He plays the most popular character on the show. Heck, he's nabbed an Emmy and a Golden Globe for the role. But no matter how many accolades have come his way since taking on the part of Tyrion Lannister on "Game of Thrones," Peter Dinklage just doesn't believe the hype he hears about himself.

One of the claims Dinklage doesn't buy -- no matter what female fans say -- ?is that he's now a sex symbol, or as some call him, a DwILF ("Dwarf I'd like to ..." -- well, you get the idea).

"That's very clever," the actor said of the acronym in a recent 20 Questions interview with Playboy magazine. "Honestly, I think there's an irony in all of this. I take it with a grain of salt. They'll say, 'Oh, he's sexy,' but women still go for guys who are six-foot-two. It's nice that people are thinking outside the box, but I don't believe any of it for a minute."

He also doesn't believe his new "badass" image, courtesy of his "Thrones" character. And if fans knew the full story behind his onscreen adventures, he doesn't think they'd believe it either.

"There's a scene in the show when I chop a man's leg off from behind," he explained. "The gentleman was probably about 70 years old. They filmed him from the back, so you don't see how old he is. Also he's an amputee. He had one leg, so basically I just knocked out the fake leg. I had a big dull sword, and I knocked a wooden leg off an amputee who was 70 years old. So to answer your question, no, I don't feel like a badass."

In fact, he insisted that the "fight scenes are all a big lie."

"The whole time, you're trying not to get hit in the eye with a sword, and you wish you had on a welding helmet," Dinklaged added.

But even if he isn't convinced that he's as great as he appears to be on the small screen, Dinklage believes one thing firmly -- his great "Game of Thrones" role isn't going away any time soon.

"I don't think Tyrion is going anywhere," he told the magazine. "He once said that he'd like to die 'in my own bed, at the age of 80, with a belly full of wine and a girl's ...' "

Ahem! Let's just say a woman making him very happy.

"I like to think that was a premonition," Dinklage mused. "That's how he's going to go. He's a survivor."

What do you think? Is the "Game of Thrones" star the "badass" sex symbol some say he is, or is he just good at acting that way? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.
