Should you charge rent to adult kids with children of their own who ...

My response by 7zebras hold good advice, as do the other responses. I want to expand on one point of 7zebras. There is something else going on here as to why your daughter-in-law lost her job and why your son's salary isn't enough to keep them out of bankruptcy court. Not sure what it is, but certainly there is irresponsible behavior on both, and there may be more since your daughter-in-law exhibits such emotional outbursts when asked to contribute to the household. So many things folks can do to pull themselves up, especially when they have the kind of help you and your husband are providing: get any job, get a second job, or a third, find a different job, eliminate extras including cigarettes and alcohol, and so on. The only way I would let these two continue to live with me is if they began contributing much, much more than they are currently doing, as 7zebras suggested, and I would take over their finances while they lived with me. I am willing to bet there will be funds left at the end of the month. Please let us know how this situation develops, but one thing is certain, beyond any doubt, the changes must be generated and managed by you and your husband, or the family situation will continue to deteriorate.
