Great Ideas To Help You Make Great Meals!

Interested in saving money? In today's economy, who among us isn't? What about losing weight and improving your overall health? If your answer is a resounding YES, then making one change in your life can help you accomplish all three of those goals! The solution is as close as your kitchen.

When cooking with raw meat or eggs, it is very important that you keep your hands and cooking station very sanitary. This is because the raw form of these materials can spread illnesses, such as salmonella, to you. If you do contract an illness, you will be very sick and won't be cooking for a while!

Store your spices in a cool, dark place, such as a cabinet or pantry. One of the biggest cooking mistakes people make is storing herbs and spices above the stove. The heat, humidity and light will causes herbs and spices to lose their flavor. For the most flavorful meals, take good care of your spices.

Pesto cooking tip! When you are using pesto sauce, make sure you never heat it up! If you want to have it in a pasta or soup dish, it is best if you cook the food first - then add the uncooked pesto. This is important because cooking pesto will make the basil have a bitter taste.

To minimize freezer burn when attempting to freeze foods try placing foods in a zip-lock freezer bag and close it most of the way but allow enough room to insert a drinking straw through the small opening. Squeeze out as much air as possible, and suck the rest out through the straw, pinching the bag the rest of the way closed when the air is gone. Less air exposure in the bag means fresher, freezer-burn-free foods when you are ready to defrost them.

Cooking hamburgers seems to be easy, but there are some tricks to learn. Make a hole in the center of the patty before you put it on the grill. The hole prevents the meat from rising in the middle so you won't have an uncooked middle with burnt edges any more. The whole will completely disappear during cooking so no one will notice your trick.

After cooking, always let your meat rest before serving it. This is especially true when you pull meat from a hot grill. Moisture that keeps your meat tender is sealed within it. When you cut steaming hot meat, the steam that rises is actually the moisture leaving the meat. When you let meat "settle" for at least 15 minutes prior to serving, the moisture and tenderness is preserved.

When pressing sticky ingredients into a baking pan such as marshmallow treats or cheesy casseroles, be sure to coat the back of a spoon with non-stick cooking spray before using it. This prevents the sticky goo from sticking to the spoon and makes it possible to evenly smooth the food into the pan. You can reapply spray as needed.

Preparing more of your own meals has numerous financial and health-related benefits, and regardless of your motivations for cooking, you'll see the benefits in various aspects of your life. You'll also take a great deal of pride and satisfaction in preparing a delicious, home-cooked meal. So what are you waiting for? Go get to it!
