Torey Malatia, the longtime general manager of public radio station WBEZ-FM 91.5, is resigning his post effective Friday.
He announced his decision in a joint statement issued by parent organization Chicago Public Media, where he served as president and CEO.
?It has been my honor to lead the transformation of what was a fine radio station (WBEZ 91.5 FM) into an internationally revered institution on the cutting edge of trans-platform in-depth journalism,? Malatia said.
Malatia, 61, joined WBEZ as program director in 1993 and became president and general manager three years later.? During his tenure, the station shifted away from music toward news and public affairs, launching such programs as ?Eight Forty-Eight? and the National Public Radio co-production ?Wait, Wait?Don?t Tell Me!?in 1998, and ?Sound Opinions? in 2005.
Among Malatia?s other accomplishments, he co-created ?This American Life? with Ira Glass in 1995. The award-winning show, which moved to New York in 2006, is distributed to more than 500 U.S. public radio stations.
He also launched Vocalo in 2007, which broadcasts user-generated content on 89.5 FM to Chicago?s South Side and Northwest Indiana.

Steve Baird, chairman of Chicago Public Media, said in the statement . ?Malatia innovated in the programming realm and acted as an effective advocate of the organization in Chicago and in public radio nationally.?
Chicago Public Media?s board of directors is launching a nationwide search to fill the CEO position. Alison Scholly, chief operating officer, will lead the organization on an interim basis.
